Optum Insight Technology and Engineering is a critical function in Optum Insight driving the innovation and value we provide our customers and partners. This team is focused on products, solutions, platform / enabling capability development, product development lifecycle, engineering excellence and connectivity to Optum Technology.
As the Sr. Director of Engineering, AI & ML, the individual will lead Optum State Government Solutions (SGS Tech) AI and machine learning initiatives. The individual will be responsible for driving technical delivery, overseeing design and implementation of scalable and robust AI solutions, and driving integration of AI/ML capabilities that power our products, engagements, and critical business functions. This role will ensure that our AI/ML systems align with both local and global business strategies, maintaining seamless integration and high-performance standards.
This role requires a high level of technical expertise with AI models, as well as practical experience in implementing AI/ML solutions to address business problems. The individual will utilize their extensive knowledge in advanced natural language processing (NLP), generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs), ML Operations (MLOps), data architecture, data pipelines, and cloud-managed services.

- Lead teams of engineers, data scientists, and AI/ML developers to create AI capabilities
- Work across different business areas to identify opportunities, prioritize tasks, and execute delivery with both internal teams and external partners
- Collaborate with stakeholders from various departments, provide leadership across multiple locations, set high standards for the team, and hire, train, and retain exceptional talent

Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, product management, and advanced technologies
- 10+ years of experience managing multiple workstreams in software engineering
- 7+ years of experience in leadership roles, managing and mentoring teams
- Proven track record of delivering AI and ML solutions that provide business value
- Deep expertise in AI topics, especially NLP and semantic search
- Experience with MLOps, data platforms (e.g., Snowflake), data pipelines (e.g., Airflow), and messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka)
- Proven solid background in data architecture, software architecture, and distributed systems
- Proven excellent problem-solving skills focused on innovation, efficiency, and scalability
- Proven solid communication and collaboration skills, engaging effectively with stakeholders at all levels

- Experience in Python, Java, SQL, and other relevant programming languages and tools
