About the Role

We are seeking a Mid-Senior PHP Backend Developer (6 10 years of experience) to join our team in Berkeley Heights, NJ. This is a multi-year contract role (renewed annually) in a hybrid onsite model. Candidates must demonstrate deep backend development expertise, PHP proficiency, and hands-on experience with enterprise-scale, high-performance applications. CodeIgniter experience is a must. Profiles without this experience will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Architect, design, and develop robust backend systems using PHP.
Build and optimize RESTful APIs, web services, and integrations across platforms.
Work extensively with CodeIgniter and/or Laravel, Symfony) for backend-heavy workloads.
Develop scalable data processing, caching, and backend logic for enterprise systems.
Collaborate with frontend teams while maintaining a backend-first approach.
Ensure code quality through unit testing, integration testing, and performance tuning.
Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize backend logic for low latency and high availability.
Manage relational and non-relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) with complex queries and stored procedures.
Implement CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and backend deployment automation.
Enforce best practices in security (OAuth, JWT, API protection), scalability, and enterprise compliance.

Required Qualifications

6 10 years of backend-focused development experience with PHP 7/8.
Strong hands-on expertise with CodeIgniter and exposure to other modern PHP frameworks (Laravel, Symfony, etc.).
Proven experience in building enterprise-scale backend systems, APIs, and integrations.
Solid database design and query optimization experience in SQL/NoSQL environments.
Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, Git, Docker, Kubernetes.
Working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS for backend frontend integration.
Strong problem-solving skills, especially in production issue resolution and backend system performance tuning.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.

Nice-to-Have Skills

Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
Knowledge of microservices architecture and distributed backend systems.
Hands-on with asynchronous processing, queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS).
Experience in financial or high-volume enterprise applications.

Engagement Rules

Contract Position (W2 only) No C2C, No Agencies.
Role requires 6 10 years of professional backend PHP development entry-level applicants will not be considered.
Codeigniter experience is a must.
Multi-year contract with annual extensions.
