General Summary
The Principal EH&S Engineer works with minimal guidance from the Senior Manager, EH&S (Environment, Health & Safety), to plan, direct, implement, and support the Environment, Health, and Safety functions of Penumbra to achieve a safe, healthy, and incident-free workplace for employees, contractors, and visitors. The Principal Engineer combines their wideranging experience and education with professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. The Principal Engineer determines methods and procedures on new assignments and coordinates activities to address hazards, minimize risks and maintain regulatory compliance. The Principal Engineer works on issues where data analysis, evaluation of variable factors, and judgment in selecting staff, methods and techniques result in positive change for worker safety. The Principal Engineer collaborates with experts within Penumbra and external consultants to realize goals. This position would also coordinate with regulatory agencies and respond to emergency situations, as needed. The position sometimes requires flexible working hours covering all shifts and may work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays when needed. The position may also be assigned to perform work in other Penumbra facilities.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Provide support towards the achievement of Penumbra's EH&S objectives*
Lead a team of EH&S Specialists and Technicians to assist other departments and groups with their EH&S needs. *
Establish and engage EH&S program champions in various departments to facilitate ownership of the EH&S elements. *
Create and maintain training matrices to ensure EH&S training is defined and tracked to completion. *
Generate safety training content and present to teams (in person, on Teams, or PenLearn). *
Work with site leadership team to ensure that all key EH&S operational controls are in place and that EH&S action items are resolved in a timely basis. *
Work with leadership team to complete an annual evaluation of compliance for EH&S Federal, State, and local regulations*
Support the development and achievement of goals in support of corporate strategic initiatives*
Lead or participate in the investigation of employee injuries, reported hazards, near misses and other incidents utilizing OSHA best practices for incident investigations. Develop corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence, implement changes and update affected teams. *
Manage the collection, analysis, and communication of EH&S metrics for the safety benefit of employees and per regulatory requirements. Develop and deliver site specific EH&S programs, including action plans and key initiatives *
Evaluate effectiveness of EH&S programs. Determine the need for improvements or additional programs.
Lead the evaluation of EH&S contracts, outside vendors and vendor participation in safety events.
Evaluate employee feedback and implement improvements. *
Actively drive and participate in Penumbra's Safety Committee and follow up on necessary actions*
Track data for environmental analysis and submit reports including monthly waste, water usage, and utility related metrics*
Collaborate with other departments on emergency response per Penumbra's Emergency Action Plan.
Select, manage, train, and develop staff. Establish objectives and assignments and provide ongoing feedback through mentoring, performance reviews and development plans. *
Maintain documentation and records on EH&S programs including, but not limited to, CAL-OSHA, Fed-OSHA, FDA, Alameda County/Placer County, and other State and local authorities.
Work with Human Resources on workers' compensation and related matters. *
Attend and complete EH&S training for professional development, and other Penumbra required training*
Select, manage, train, and develop staff. Establish objectives and assignments and provide ongoing feedback through performance reviews and development plans. *
Adhere to the Company's Quality Management System (QMS) as well as domestic and global quality system regulations, standards, and procedures. *
Understand relevant security, privacy and compliance principles and adhere to the regulations, standards, and procedures that are applicable to the Company. *
Ensure other members of the department follow the QMS, regulations, standards, and procedures. *
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications Minimum education and experience:
Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or related field with 8+ years of experience, or demonstrated performance or equivalent combination of education and experience
Additional qualifications:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certification on Professional Ergonomics (CPE) or Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Specialist (CEES), Certified Industrial Engineering (CIE), and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHHM).
Master's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or its equivalent level of graduate education is desired but not required.
Title 22 Hazardous Waste Generator certification; HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response); basic knowledge of EH&S-related ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OSHA regulations, California hazardous materials and waste regulations, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and FDA's Quality System Regulations and their application to the company's EH&S programs; Radiation Safety, Laser Safety, and Workers' Compensation.
Highly preferred First Aid and CPR trained, forklift train-the-trainer, portable fire extinguisher, valid driver's license.
At least 3 years of experience in supervising and leading a small team.
Strong knowledge of compliance to California's OSHA general industry safety orders that apply to facilities-related activities, including safe work practices and personal protection, basic fire protection, lock out - tag out, hazardous materials, material handling and movement, forklift safety, ladder safety, electrical safety, chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, basic ergonomics, emergency response, and related Cal-OSHA requirements that apply to Penumbra.
Medical device, pharmaceutical, biotech, or other regulated industry experience desired
Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize assignments while handling various projects simultaneously
Working Conditions
General office, laboratory, cleanroom, shipping and receiving environments
Willingness and ability to work on site. May have business travel from 10% - 20%
Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens
Requires some lifting and moving of up to 25 pounds
Must be able to move between buildings and floors.
Must be able to remain stationary and use a computer or other standard office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine, for an extensive period of time each day.
Must be able to read, prepare emails, and produce documents and spreadsheets.
Must be able to move within the office and access file cabinets or supplies, as needed.
