Summary

You will serve as an Engineering Technician (Mechanical) in the Engineering & Planning Department, Code 291.1 of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

Help

  • You will perform or direct planning, installation and testing of equipment and systems involved during a ship's overhaul period.
  • You will coordinate with other engineers and technicians to ensure that all systems areas are covered and the areas of overlapping responsibilities between technical disciplines receive proper consideration.
  • You will provide technical advice to junior engineers and technicians on possible approaches to the solutions of problems experienced.
  • You will brief upper management on troubleshooting, operations and design of systems.
  • You will provide the sequence of work and manning requirements information to project and department managers.
  • You will prepare scheduling documents, milestone charts, man-day estimates and other management documents for assigned systems.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience providing expertise for major mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering projects associated with the functional design, performance of various types of submarine weapon systems and components.
  • Experience directing the planning, installation, and testing of equipment and systems involved during a ship's overhaul period.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing correspondence, such as Job Summaries, Task Group Instruments (TGI's), Deficiency Logs (DL's), Deficiency Reports (DR's), technical reports, estimates, status reports, instructions, and procedures.
  • Experience negotiating projects with managers and ship force support to gain approval and testing authority.
  • Experience coordinating the work of branch engineers and technicians, to ensure all system areas are covered.

GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience applying knowledge to major mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering projects associated with the functional design, performance of various types of submarine weapon systems and components.
  • Experience assisting with the planning, installation, and testing of equipment and systems involved during a ship's overhaul period.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing correspondence, such as Job Summaries, Task Group Instruments (TGI's), Deficiency Logs (DL's), Deficiency Reports (DR's), technical reports, estimates, status reports, instructions, and procedures.
  • Experience negotiating projects with managers and ship force support to gain approval and testing authority.
  • Experience assisting with coordinating the work of branch engineers and technicians, to ensure all system areas are covered.
