SCOPE OF WORK

The Analytics Specialist will play a pivotal role in enabling CalPERS' analytics and business intelligence functions by designing and maintaining comprehensive, scalable data models. This position requires a blend of expertise in traditional relational modeling and modern data architecture principles tailored for cloud, analytics, and AI/ML use cases.

Data Modeling & Architecture: Design and maintain relational and cloud-based data models. Build medallion architectures and AI/ML-ready data structures aligned with CalPERS analytics goals. Create and optimize data structures for both operational and analytical workloads.

Tool Proficiency: Leverage Erwin Data Modeler for enterprise data modeling.Use Power BI for modeling data to support visualization, reporting, and self-service analytics.

Documentation & Publishing: Publish and maintain models on the CalPERS intranet. Develop clear documentation to improve data literacy and ensure usability by business users.

Training & Knowledge Transfer: Lead knowledge transfer sessions to internal teams and stakeholders. Support state staff in maintaining and evolving enterprise data models.

Must have skills:

Hands-on expertise in data modeling methodologies (relational, medallion, cloud-native).

Strong experience with Erwin Data Modeler and Power BI.

Experience creating AI/ML data foundations.

Ability to train, mentor, and collaborate with technical and non-technical teams alike.

Role and Responsibilities

Deliverable 1: Design, Develop, and Maintain Relational, Cloud-Based, Power BI, and AI/ Machine Learning-Specific Data Models.

The consultant will design, develop, and maintain data models tailored to meet the organization's needs. This includes creating relational data models to support traditional reporting and analytics, as well as cloud-based data models leveraging modern architectures to enable scalability, performance, and efficient data processing. The consultant will also optimize Power BI data models to ensure fast, reliable, and user-friendly reporting and visualization. Additionally, the consultant will develop AI/Machine Learning-specific data models to support advanced analytics workflows, including feature engineering, data preparation, and integration with AI/ML tools. These models will be designed to align with the organization's business objectives, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and usability across all platforms.

The consultant will also be responsible for publishing data models to the appropriate platforms, ensuring they are accessible, secure, and optimized for use by stakeholders. This includes publishing models to cloud environments, Power BI, and other relevant systems as required. Comprehensive documentation will accompany all data models, detailing their structure, purpose, and usage. The documentation will include data dictionaries, entity- relationship diagrams, and step-by-step instructions for maintaining and updating the models. This ensures that the models are transparent, easy to understand, and can be effectively utilized by both technical and non-technical users.

Deliverable 2: Knowledge Transfer

The consultant will conduct regular training sessions tailored to the skill levels of our team

members. These sessions will focus on:

Key concepts and tools related to cloud-based data modeling, Power BI, and AI/ML.

Q&A sessions to address specific challenges or questions from the team.

Training will be designed to build confidence and competence, enabling team members to

take ownership of the systems and processes.

The consultant will also work closely with our existing team members throughout the engagement, fostering a collaborative environment where knowledge sharing is a core focus.

This hands-on approach ensures that team members are actively involved in the design, development, and maintenance of the data models, rather than being passive observers. By embedding team members in the process, they will gain practical, real-world experience under the guidance of the consultant.

1. Extensive experience in designing, developing, and maintaining complex data models in Snowflake.

2. Extensive knowledge of Power BI, including data modeling, data warehousing concepts, ETL/ELT processes, report development, and performance optimization.

3. Extensive experience in designing, developing, and maintaining complex relational data models, including working with Oracle databases and managing Data Definition Language (DDL) scripts.

4. Extensive experience in designing, developing, and maintaining AI/Machine Learning-specific data models.

5. Extensive experience with Erwin Data Modeler.
