Location: Bellevue, WA (Onsite)
Schedule: Part-Time, ~20 hours/week
Duration: 12-month contract (potential extension)

System One is seeking an experienced I&C System Design Engineer to support the development of advanced nuclear reactor technologies. This part-time, 20-hour per week contract role is ideal for a highly skilled engineer looking for flexible work while contributing to the advancement of next-generation clean energy systems.

The I&C System Design Engineer will play a key role in instrumentation and control (I&C) system design, prototype development, testing, and plant-level integration. The role involves close collaboration with a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists, suppliers, and technical partners to ensure successful design execution and alignment with safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
  • Design I&C systems and sub-system functional requirements from concept through final design.
  • Develop and review system- and component-level specifications, scopes of work, and deliverables.
  • Support system integration across safety-related and non-safety-related I&C systems.
  • Perform engineering evaluations in alignment with nuclear codes, standards, and NRC regulations.
  • Specify instrumentation techniques suitable for sodium fast reactor and integrated energy storage systems.
  • Prepare and review technical design documents, including requirements, design descriptions, interface documents, and specifications.
  • Develop drawing packages (P&IDs, control system architecture, logic/loop diagrams, installation drawings).
  • Provide oversight and technical review of supplier deliverables.
  • Collaborate across disciplines, including licensing, procurement, safety analysis, and PRA.
  • Support continuous improvement by applying industry best practices and lessons learned.
Qualifications
  • B.S. or higher in Controls, Electrical, or related engineering discipline.
  • 18+ years of direct experience in instrumentation and controls engineering (advanced degrees may offset years of experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement I&C systems and deliver industrial platforms.
  • Experience with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation systems design required.
  • Familiarity with nuclear QA standards (10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1) preferred.
  • Knowledge of IEEE standards (e.g., IEEE 379, IEEE 603, IEEE 497, IEEE 7-4.3.2) desired.
  • Experience in high-temperature process design (400 C+) preferred.
  • Ability to manage competing objectives and resolve design constraints effectively.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with CAD tools (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks) preferred.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience with reactor protection systems, radiation monitoring, neutron detectors, seismic trip systems, or post-accident monitoring is a plus.
Job Functions
  • Work involves prolonged sitting/standing, fine motor control, and frequent computer use.
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Standard office-based environment, >8 hrs/day.
  • Limited travel (0-5%) may be required.
