Description

The Mainframe Systems Programmer s role is to observe and control the company s mainframe computer systems and software for the purpose of uninterrupted data processing. This includes monitoring the system for error indicators, error messages, failures, and peripheral malfunctions. The Mainframe Systems Programmer will apply analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, diagnose, and resolve malfunctions to achieve system or network recovery.

 

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Prepare and deliver reports, recommendations, or alternatives that address existing and potential trouble areas in mainframe systems.
  • Conduct research on hardware and software products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts.

 

Operational Management

  • Support the system software applications.
  • Respond to console issues that negatively affect system availability.
  • Maintain security (RACF) table on the mainframe
  • Analyze, diagnose, and resolve system errors, malfunctions, misconfigurations, and job stoppages to maintain services, enhance capabilities, and prevent system outages.
  • Seek assistance from application development staff to resolve production issues and escalate system problems as appropriate.
  • Maintain problem logs, tape logs, access logs, and user problem report logs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve end-user issues and assist with end-user questions or programming inquiries.
  • Responsible for the system backups to ensure business continuity.
  • Assist in development and drafting of operating instruction documents and data analysis methodologies for use by other personnel.
  • Maintain release levels of all system software to ensure that all software is supported by the various vendors in case of an outage.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage the day-to-day work independently

 

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification

  • 5-9 years of experience supporting and maintaining z/OS
  • 5-9 years of experience supporting DB2 and/or CICS
  • 5-9 years of experience troubleshooting issues related to the mainframe
  • Experience with ROSCOE a plus
  • Bachelor s degree in computer science preferred.
  • Certifications or technical training is a plus.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven experience in the operation of IBM mainframe hardware, software, and standards, as well as data analysis and processing methodologies.
  • Practical knowledge of data input and output procedures, job control processes, and system backup protocols.
  • Experience with core system software applications, including z/OS, DB2, CICS with a specialization in one of the above
  • Working technical knowledge of COBOL, Assembler programming languages.
  • Knowledge of production schedules
