Job Details

In this role you form part of a Bioinformatics team working at the cutting edge of ML research and development in antibody engineering to build and maintain novel ML/data pipelines. We share a vision to unlock next generation decision-making by integrating ML approaches to better inform lab experiments and novel approaches to data interrogation. You will also work closely with data management, software engineering, computational modelling, and machine learning team members with access to industry-leading biologics R&D data across AstraZeneca.

The Gaithersburg site ( ) employs more than 3,500 experts in our field and is only a short drive from Washington, DC. BUSINESS AREA

Join the Biologics Engineering team at AstraZeneca, where we are responsible for the discovery and optimisation of next-generation biological drug candidates across all key therapy areas. We are developing in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs. BE empowered to act fast on smart risks and keep ahead in the fast-paced Oncology field.

What you'll do
  • Ownership of some of the software engineering standards within the team, the documentation of these standards along with the development of artifacts that make it simple to apply to new or existing projects.
  • Developing efficient and scalable processes for the distributed training of large machine learning models in both cloud and on-prem environments. This will involve working with both internal infrastructure teams and external vendors and research institutes.
  • Evaluate the applicability of new technologies / application features and make recommendations for technology and business strategic roadmaps.
  • Serve as a mentor for junior staff members by conducting technical training sessions and reviewing project outputs.
  • Identifies new hardware/software technologies to fit specialised business needs and configurations.
  • Identify issues with current processes and provide input on proposed changes to enhance effectiveness of the BE workflows, fostering continuous improvement and innovation.
Essential for the role
  • Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience with a minimum of 0+ years of experience in a Computer Science or Data Management related field
  • Track record of implementing software engineering best practices for multiple use cases.
  • Experience of automation of the entire machine learning model lifecycle.
  • Experience with optimization of distributed training of machine learning models.
  • Use of Kubernetes and implementation of machine learning tools in that context.
  • Experience partnering and/or collaborating with teams that have different competences.
  • The role holder will possess a blend of design skills needed for Agile data development projects.
  • Proficiency or passion for learning, in data engineer techniques and testing methodologies and Postgraduate degree in data related field of study will also help.
Desirable for the role
  • Experience with DevOps or DataOps concepts, preferably hands-on experience implementing continuous integration or highly automated end-to-end environments.
  • Interest in machine learning will also be advantageous.
  • Experience implementing a microservices architecture.
  • Demonstrate initiative, strong customer orientation, and cross-cultural working.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior significant experience working in Pharmaceutical or Healthcare industry environment.
  • Experience of applying policies, procedures, and guidelines.
