Failure Analysis Specialist

Cupertino, CA

JOB OVERVIEW:

Apple is seeking an energetic, hands-on individual to join the nanomechanical division. The lab is responsible for applying advanced indentation technologies to the surface characterization of Apple products. The lab is part of Apple’s Failure Analysis group, which provides failure analysis services to resolve reliability, manufacturing, and material design issues. The successful candidate will have interest in applying indentation techniques to material-based issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work under the direction of engineers to execute scientific experiments and lab equipment maintenance.
  • Sample preparation and hands-on operation of indentation testers to collect data on the mechanical properties of thin films, coatings, or substrates (e.g., hardness, elastic modulus, etc). Scratch testing to measure adhesion strength, fracture, deformation, friction force and other surface mechanical properties of materials used in a wide range of applications.
  • Utilization of microscopy techniques, such as optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, to characterize sample structures and morphology.
  • Work in a team environment on multiple, concurrent projects and experiments of moderate complexity.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A, A.S, or B.S. degree in Science or Engineering (Materials Science, Mathematics, Physics or Mechanical Engineering preferred).
  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience with sample preparation and operation of one of the following is a plus: nanoindentation, optical microscopes, atomic force microscope, etc.
  • Matlab knowledge is a plus.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in a lab environment.
  • Highly effective communication skills including the ability to seek out direction, ask clarifying questions, communicate findings, and accept feedback.
  • Experience with routine statistical analysis, data processing methods, and spreadsheet manipulation.
  • Willingness to be flexible, learn new techniques, manage multiple activities, and frequently pivot to new tasks and responsibilities.
