Part Time Remote Opportunity
20 hours per week
Remote but needs to be in the Austin, TX area
Description
The individual works within a large, centralized network operations center, providing expert-level design and architecture for both local and remote network infrastructure using a variety of connectivity technologies. Responsibilities include directing network security measures, conducting capacity planning, and leading strategic initiatives to optimize network resource performance. The role involves creating detailed network design documentation, researching and implementing new technologies, and performing quality assurance assessments on proposed and existing network systems. The engineer leads preventative maintenance activities, including firmware and operating system updates, patch management, and system tuning. They evaluate new hardware and software, prepare recommendations for leadership, and establish enterprise standards for telecommunications equipment. Acting as a third-tier support resource, the individual resolves complex network issues and supports IT staff with project implementation and troubleshooting. They also provide technical leadership, mentor team members, ensure documentation accuracy, and participate in strategic planning for telecommunications initiatives. The position requires independent judgment and operates with minimal supervision while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies.
Skills & Qualifications
a) Extensive experience with a wide range of Cisco network hardware, including ISR and ASR series routers, as well as Catalyst series managed switches used in both access and distribution layers. Proficient in configuring and managing stacked and modular switch environments to support enterprise-scale networks. Skilled in implementing and maintaining wireless network technologies, including solutions from Meraki. Demonstrated capability in deploying and supporting VoIP systems and unified communications platforms such as Cisco CUCM, IVR, and Unity. Familiar with physical infrastructure components such as copper and fiber Ethernet installations, patch panels, and structured cabling systems.
b) Strong working knowledge of core networking and routing protocols including EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, HSRP, and VRRP, with a focus on high availability and redundancy. Well-versed in switching technologies such as VLANs, VTP, STP, PVST+, RPVST+, and inter-VLAN routing. Experienced in advanced Layer 3 switching, multicast operations, EtherChannel, and transparent bridging. Security expertise includes Cisco ASA firewalls with Firepower, access control lists (ACLs), policy and class mapping, and enterprise security architecture standards like TACACS+, RADIUS, and Cisco ACS. Also familiar with WAN optimization, proxy technologies, and general network hardening practices.
c) Proficient in configuring and supporting enterprise services such as DNS, DHCP, DFS, and WINS, as well as managing content filtering and VPN connectivity. Experienced with network monitoring and management protocols and features including IOS, NAT, SNMP, SYSLOG, NTP, CDP, TFTP, and FTP. Skilled in planning and executing network assessments, system upgrades, and performance tuning. Demonstrates a solid understanding of TCP/IP-based networking, wireless security protocols, and scalable LAN/WAN architecture. Capable of managing complex network environments.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
