Job Details
Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Virtualization Engineer to lead our critical infrastructure migration initiative from VMware vSphere to Microsoft Hyper-V and Azure Stack HCI. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in both virtualization platforms and a proven track record of successfully executing large-scale, complex cross-platform migrations with minimal disruption. This role is a contract-to-hire opportunity, focusing initially on the successful completion of the migration project.
Key Responsibilities
- Migration Planning & Execution:
- Design, document, and execute a comprehensive migration strategy and detailed runbook for moving all virtual workloads (VMs, templates, and associated configurations) from VMware ESXi/vCenter environments to Hyper-V/System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) and/or Azure Stack HCI.
- Perform pre-migration assessments, dependency mapping, and capacity planning.
- Utilize and master industry-standard migration tools (e.g., Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC), third-party solutions like Carbonite Migrate, or native Hyper-V import/export functionality) for seamless workload transfer.
- Infrastructure Management:
- Design, deploy, and configure the new Hyper-V cluster infrastructure, including networking (virtual switches, QoS), storage (CSV, SMB 3.0), and high availability features (Failover Clustering).
- Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot the existing VMware environment during the transition phase.
- Configure and manage the System Center suite (SCVMM, SCOM, SCDPM) for the new Hyper-V environment.
- Post-Migration & Optimization:
- Validate application and operating system functionality post-migration.
- Implement necessary performance tuning and optimization within the Hyper-V environment.
- Develop comprehensive documentation, training materials, and perform knowledge transfer to the operations team.
- Advanced Troubleshooting:
- Resolve complex performance issues, connectivity problems, and operating system quirks specific to cross-platform virtual machine conversions.
Required Technical Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of professional experience in Enterprise-level IT infrastructure.
- Deep expertise in VMware vSphere: ESXi, vCenter Server, vSAN, vMotion, and DRS.
- Expertise in Microsoft Hyper-V: Failover Clustering, Virtual Networking, Shared Storage (CSV), and Live Migration.
- Proficiency with Migration Tools and Methodologies:
- Proven experience using automated tools (e.g., MVMC, PlateSpin, or similar) to convert VMDK and VHD/VHDX formats.
- Familiarity with clean installation vs. P2V/V2V conversion techniques.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft System Center: SCVMM (mandatory), SCOM, and SCDPM.
- Solid understanding of storage technologies (SAN, NAS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel) and their integration with both VMware and Hyper-V.
- Experience with PowerShell scripting for automation of repetitive tasks and large-scale changes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Azure Stack HCI deployment and management.
- Certifications such as VCP (VMware Certified Professional) and/or MCSE/MCSA (Server Infrastructure/Cloud Platform).
- Experience with cloud migration paths from on-premises virtualization to Azure IaaS.
- Familiarity with network virtualization concepts and solutions.
Education & Soft Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities and a meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage a project timeline, and prioritize tasks effectively under pressure.
