We are seeking a Junior Scrum Master to join our team in Ashburn, Virginia to support the ongoing modernization and maintenance of systems for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program.
Qualified applicants may be subject to a security investigation and must meet minimum qualifications for access to classified information. This is a highly collaborative and process-driven position supporting Agile delivery teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for:
- Facilitating daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies across development teams.
- Assisting the Product Owner in maintaining a well-groomed product backlog and ensuring user stories are clear and actionable.
- Removing or escalating impediments to keep teams on track and delivering value.
- Maintaining sprint boards, burndown charts, and team metrics using Jira and Confluence.
- Promoting Agile values and principles across cross-functional teams and coaching team members on Scrum best practices.
- Collaborating closely with developers, testers, business analysts, and technical leads to maintain consistent Agile delivery.
- Supporting the coordination and communication between dependent teams and stakeholder groups.
- Helping the team track progress, identify risks, and manage scope during the sprint cycle.
Work Experience & Job Skills:
- Minimum 2+ years of experience serving as a Scrum Master or in an Agile delivery support role.
- Understanding of Scrum, Kanban, and Agile delivery methodologies (SAFe experience is a plus).
- Familiarity with Agile project management tools such as Jira, Confluence, or Azure DevOps.
- Knowledge of SDLC, Agile metrics (velocity, burndown), and backlog management practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assist in resolving team blockers.
- Experience working in or alongside technical teams (e.g., Java, Angular, or microservices environments is a plus).
- Education:
- Bachelor s degree in computer science, Business, Project Management, or related field is required.
- Applicable work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
- Must have a current CBP BI clearance or be eligible to obtain one.
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), or other Agile certifications preferred.
Communication Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to facilitate productive discussions across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills to manage multiple priorities.
- Must work well in a collaborative, matrixed team environment.
Travel:
- Travel to customer site in Ashburn, VA as needed for meetings.
- Team is currently meeting onsite every Wednesday.
Environmental Requirements:
- Mainly sedentary; in an office environment.
- May be required to lift up to ten (10) pounds.
- Must be flexible with extended hours working if needed.
