Position: Manufacturing Engineer
Location: Bethesda, MD
About the Role
We're looking for a highly skilled Manufacturing Engineer to join our team at a leading defense contractor. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-volume, low-mix manufacturing environments and is passionate about driving efficiency through process optimization and automation. You'll work cross-functionally to design, implement, and improve manufacturing systems, with a strong focus on robotics, automation, and lean principles.
Responsibilities
- Design and optimize manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, machining, and material handling.
- Develop efficient plant layouts and machine arrangements to maximize productivity and throughput.
- Define and document sequences of operations and fabrication procedures for tools and equipment.
- Adapt equipment and machine designs to meet factory and production requirements.
- Integrate inspection and testing protocols into production plans to ensure product quality.
- Monitor and evaluate machinery and equipment performance; identify and resolve inefficiencies.
- Apply statistical process control (SPC) techniques to improve manufacturing reliability.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to influence design decisions based on manufacturability.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal quality standards.
- Lead automation initiatives, including robotic integration and PLC programming.
- Maintain and optimize automated production lines to ensure uptime and quality.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, preferably in high-volume, low-mix environments.
- Strong understanding of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with machine design, equipment installation, and material handling systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial robotics (e.g., Fanuc, Epson) and automation systems.
- Proficiency in PLC programming and integration.
- Knowledge of statistical process control and lean manufacturing principles.
- Certifications in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or SPC.
- Experience with tools such as CREO, SAP, Solumina, and PLC software.
