Job Description

How you will make an impact:

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Thermo Fisher you will join the technology and product development team within our R&D department. We are a group of dedicated engineers and scientists working to design innovative instruments that apply various spectroscopic techniques to measurement of trace contaminants in ambient air and process gas streams. The successful candidate will have proven experience designing machined parts and sophisticated assemblies and will appreciate how on-line analyzers can drive our customers' efforts to improve environmental quality and process efficiency.

What you will do:
  • Apply system-level thinking to provide mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary technology development team to design, build, and test prototypes of new analytical instrumentation.
  • Create designs in SolidWorks and work with vendors and machinists to support fabrication.
  • "Hands-on" assembly and evaluation of prototypes.
  • Refine existing designs and participate in laboratory or field evaluations as necessary.
  • Engage with Manufacturing Engineering and our Operations Department to ensure new designs meet manufacturability requirements.
How you will get there:

Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience in design of machined components, electromechanical assemblies, and/or optomechanical assemblies.
Experience and Qualifications:
  • Three years of related research and development experience with a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree with relevant experience
  • Proficiency using SolidWorks or OnShape for design and integration of electro-mechanical components.
  • Clear understanding of CNC and traditional metal machining processes.
  • Familiarity with the principals of design for manufacturing.
  • Fundamental understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance techniques.
  • Candidates with experience in optics design, fiber optics, ray-tracing, or integration of lasers into optomechanical systems will be preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical devices and test equipment such as stepper motors, pumps, solenoids, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and power meters.
  • General experience with hands-on work in a laboratory setting and proficiency in the use of common hand tools.
  • Positive demeanor, excellent communication, and problem-solving skills.

Our Mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Watch as our colleagues explain 5 reasons to work with us. As one team of 100,000+ colleagues, we share a common set of values - Integrity, Intensity, Innovation and Involvement - working together to accelerate research, tackle complex scientific challenges and drive technological innovation.
