Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead a warehouse and material handling simulation initiative at a large-scale building materials manufacturing and distribution facility in the Champaign-Urbana region of IL. This role will serve as a key contributor to a high-impact automation strategy designed to evaluate current processes, simulate future-state scenarios, and build a business case for automation investments-including AGVs, autonomous forklifts, and robotics.
This facility serves as the pilot site for a broader enterprise initiative expected to expand to five plus additional facilities nationwide. The selected candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders and simulation experts to deliver detailed assessments and actionable insights to support automation-driven improvements.

Project Manager - Warehouse & Material Handling Simulation

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead a warehouse and material handling simulation initiative at a large-scale building materials manufacturing and distribution facility in the Champaign-Urbana region of IL. The selected candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders and simulation experts to deliver detailed assessments and actionable insights to support automation-driven improvements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the simulation and process assessment of material handling workflows in a high-volume production and distribution environment.
- Collaborate with internal engineering and automation teams to model current-state vs future-state scenarios using Autodesk FlexSim or comparable warehouse simulation tools.
- Conduct and coordinate time studies and data collection, leveraging existing video and plant operational data.
- Analyze and simulate:
- Raw material movement from inbound trucks to production equipment.
- Automation of fiberglass loading into processing machinery.
- Removal and handling of packaging/totes.
- Breakdown, stacking, and reuse logistics.
- End-of-line movement of finished goods to warehouse and outbound logistics.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to evaluate the feasibility and ROI of implementing AGVs, automated forklifts, and robotic systems.
- Act as the liaison between simulation specialists and enterprise stakeholders, ensuring timely communication and milestone delivery.
- Prepare documentation, progress reports, and presentations to support leadership decision-making.
- Client the groundwork for future simulation projects, including production line assessments and automation planning across other U.S. sites.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or relevant technical discipline
- 10+ years of experience in project management within manufacturing, logistics, automation, or industrial simulation environments.
- Proven track record delivering complex projects involving material handling or warehouse optimization.
- Experience with warehouse simulation software (e.g., FlexSim, AnyLogic, Simio) and time study methodologies.
- Familiarity with automated material handling systems (AGVs, robotic forklifts, conveyors, etc.).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience coordinating cross-functional or distributed teams, including engineering, operations, and technical contractors.
- Ability to work independently at an on-site manufacturing location and lead remote and nearshore contributors.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with automation in building materials or bulk products manufacturing is a plus.
- Prior work with North American-based automation pilot programs.
