Overview
The Integrated Power Systems directorate is seeking to add new talent to advance and support development of electric drive (E-drive) control system components for the All Electric Navy. The United States Navy's goals for more capable and more affordable submarines are shared and met by Electric Boat engineers as cutting-edge electric drive propulsion system components are developed, integrated, tested, and delivered with the utmost importance placed on first-time quality, in a timeframe that supports the needs of the United States Navy.
Unique opportunities exist to advance technology centric to propulsion control, which presently consists of a highly diverse team of engineers and support staff that hold technical knowledge key to delivery of robust, high-performance control systems for the COLUMBIA Class. These opportunities are being expanded beyond the COLUMBIA Class, and require engineers to perform tasking centric to component design through internal research and development.
Candidates may be required to travel (domestically), based on needs of the program. Flexible Work Arrangements are offered by Electric Boat, but vary on the amount of classified material that the candidate interacts with.
Multiple roles are available for candidates with interests in either technical or programmatic support for design, development, and test of control system components in a model-based systems engineering approach. Candidates whose interest and experience align with the following roles are desired for this hands-on engineering effort:
Systems Engineers

Candidates whose interest and experience align with the following roles are desired for this hands-on engineering effort:
Systems Engineers
- Design and analysis of control systems within MATLAB & Simulink (and other Mathworks tools) in both the time-domain and frequency-domain to support system design from concept design through until full system hardware integration testing
- Use of IBM Rational DOORS for defining system and component-level requirements based on performance criteria, system modeling and predictions, and integration with other systems
- Experience (or the desire to get experience) in model-based systems engineering developments/projects with an emphasis on hands-on tasking
- Detailed understanding of how to properly document test cases and create effective and focused testing plans
- Able to prepare for peer review by creating practical demonstrations of proposed solutions and demonstrating them to other members of the team
- Collaborate in team environment with hardware, software, and program engineers to ensure strict adherence to requirements at each step of development
- Perform/support/analyze performance of motor drive and control systems using model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop testing
- Prior technical experience in/relating to embedded system design, control system design, computer/software engineering, hardware engineering is desired, but not required
- Carry out design reviews and technical working meetings, as well as contribute to engineering/design reports and presentations to external stakeholders
- Familiarity with Agile development
- Experience with controls rapid prototyping via auto-code generation is desired
- Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar engineering undergraduate and graduate coursework paths
- Experience in requirement analysis, hardware/software design, software development and test, hardware/software integration
- Software, embedded software development experience in one (or more) of the following languages: C, C++, Assembly, Java
- Hardware/system description language experience (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog, SystemC) is desired, but not required
- Experience in selection of commercial-off-the-shelf and custom components and circuit/processing cards to support rapid prototyping and demonstration of system functionality (based on system requirements)
- Knowledge of industry-standard serial (RS-232/422/485, I2C, SPI) and high-speed serial protocols (PCIe, Ethernet, SRIO, etc.) and experience with fiber-optic communication systems is highly desired
- Experience with Xilinx, Microsemi, Texas Instruments, and Intel product lines and offerings
- Experience with Visual Studio, QT, Jira, Git
- Ability to thoroughly document code and contribute to engineering/design reports for distribution to external stakeholders
- Detailed understanding of how to properly document test cases and create effective and focused testing plans
- Able to prepare for peer review by creating practical demonstrations of proposed solutions and demonstrating them to other members of the team
- Familiarity with Agile development
- Experience with controls rapid prototyping via auto-code generation is desired
- Plan, organize, and manage tasking and workflow of engineers to ensure tracking to communicated schedules and deadlines, within allocated funding
- Generate/collect and report project schedule/cost metrics (CPI, SPI), perform EVMS
