Target Salary (Direct Hire):  $120,000 - $150,000

Summary/Objective:
With moderate supervision, design the physical layout of substations to comply with Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Bulletins, National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards as well as develop materials contracts and procurement specifications to ensure safe and reliable electric service. 

Essential Functions
With moderate supervision, work on the physical design of new substations or maintenance redesign of existing structures. Develop project scopes, conceptual designs, one-line diagrams and cost estimates for substation projects. 

Under moderate supervision, will assist in preparing and applying specifications, codes and standards.

Perform CAD drafting of each substation design and make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation.

Prepare and finalize record drawings from field “redline” drawings for each assigned project.

Create grading plans for new and existing substations to ensure proper water drainage.

Design Spill Prevention and Control Countermeasure (SPCC) plans for oil containment at each substation.
 
Preparation of the following substation drawings: General layout and arrangement plan, electrical equipment plans, section views (elevations), detailed bill of material, lightning strike shielding plan, grounding plan, conduit plan and below grade conduit/raceway plan, and control building specifications and equipment. 

Under moderate supervision, generate useable, complete and accurate designs, drawings, specifications, and construction and material contracts in a timely manner for substation construction contracts and bid documents. Verify on time material delivery for substation construction. 

Perform simple and routine engineering design tasks using standard techniques.

Review equipment manufacturer drawings for approval.

Provide mentoring and guidance to lower level employees.

May function as a project lead for substation projects if needed and directed by manager. 

Make on-site visits to new and existing substation sites to confirm as-builts as needed.

Knowledge
Intermediate knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and its use in the design of electric power transmission and distribution substations.  Employee will assist in the design, development, and implementation of a substation. Intermediate knowledge of substation layouts, grading plans, soil boring and ground resistivity testing, and spill prevention and containment plans. Demonstrate  intermediate technical knowledge of substation components such as transformers, circuit 
breakers, circuit switchers, capacitor banks, wave traps, reactors, and buss work. Intermediate knowledge of NESC and NEC code, IEEE and ANSI standards is required. Intermediate knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) substation design guidelines and bulletins, particularly physical clearance requirements. Must become knowledgeable of RUS construction contract and material contract procedures.

Skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D. Keep current with changing industry trends and technology. Capable of working with a high degree of accuracy. Must have good interpersonal skills to interact with all KAMO employees, member systems and other utilities as well as strong communication skills and technical writing 
skills. Must have strong organizational skills.

Must be organized and a self-starter. Requires ability to solve complex problems requiring a great deal of originality, independent thinking, strong analytical/problem solving skills, critical and logical thinking. Must be committed to productivity with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to generate useable, complete and accurate designs, drawings, specifications, and construction and material contracts in a timely manner. Ability to build and maintain professional relationships, establish credibility and trust, cooperate and communicate with other employees within and outside of the department 
including project managers, other engineers, outside vendors and contractors during construction and planning of projects.

Experience & Education
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineers and Technology (ABET) accredited school is required. Requires four (4) to seven (7) years of experience.

Advancement to the next grade level is not automatic and is determined by several factors, one of which is a successful evaluation by the department manager and the demonstrated ability to perform the functions as outlined.
