Job Description

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Material Scientist to advance physics-based computational modeling and atomistic simulation of complex dielectric materials for cutting edge defense technologies. As part of the High-Power Electromagnetics (HPEM) Team, this position centers on the development of game-changing dielectric systems for novel RF applications. Key focus areas include predicting and evaluating electronic and ionic transport phenomena, band structure, defects and doping effects, elemental and redox chemistry, field-matter interaction, carrier excitation and relaxation dynamics, and dielectric/thermal properties.

What You Will Be Doing
The successful candidate will support geographically distributed interdisciplinary teams in solving complex, unstructured problems, developing simulation workflows, and ensuring consistent research documentation. Responsibilities include designing and executing computational studies, analyzing large datasets, integrating material models into system-level performance assessments via collaborating with experimentalists and system engineers, and presenting findings to technical stakeholders and customers.

A strong foundation in electronic structure and electromagnetic theory is required, along with a track record of peer-reviewed publications in dielectric material modeling for RF devices. The candidate should be comfortable mentoring early-career engineers, partnering with universities, and driving innovation at the intersection of materials science, RF physics, and high-performance computing.

Basic Qualifications

PhD or MS in Condensed Matter Physics, Applied mathematics, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or related technical discipline.
Expert-level ability in materials modeling, particularly in understanding band structure, carrier/lattice dynamics, defects and quasi-particle excitation, and field-induced phenomena in ordered/disordered dielectric systems.
Highly proficient in programming languages like Python, C++, MATLAB, or similar for data analysis and integration with simulation workflow.
Demonstrated expertise in predicting structure-property relationship via modeling and simulation of physical properties in bulk dielectrics and composites.
Experience with photonic, metamaterial, or RF system simulations in tools such as MATLAB, CST, COMSOL is a plus.
Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications or equivalent contributions in modeling/simulation of material properties.
Demonstrated ability to work and lead in a collaborative, diverse environment.
Excellent communication skills and hands on experience in data analysis, presentation, and compiling into technical reports.

Desired skills

PhD in theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Applied mathematics, Materials Science, Material Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or related technical discipline.
10+ years of experience with computational methods for physics-based modeling, simulation, or engineering analysis of materials.
Experience working with and designing High-Power Electromagnetics (HPEM) systems.
Excellent theoretical foundation in atomistic modeling within frameworks such as DFT molecular dynamics.
Deep understanding of defects in crystalline and amorphous materials, with familiarity in spectroscopic techniques and tools used for their characterization.
Fundamental knowledge of field-matter interactions, dielectric breakdown, and failure mechanisms under extreme environments.
Ability to adapt and integrate different simulation tools and algorithms-such as phase-field, finite element, and finite difference methods-using platforms like COMSOL or MATLAB to rapidly evaluate material properties.
Experience in applying ML/AI methods to accelerate materials discovery and property prediction is a plus.
Have broad exposure to high power microwave applications and RF communications such as antenna design.

Ability to work remotely

Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Work Schedule Information

Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.

National Pay Statement

Pay Rate: The annual base salary range for this position in California, Massachusetts, and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington or Washington DC is $104,500 - $184,115. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate's final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
