We are searching for a 3D Scientific Applications Specialist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with Guidehouse and based in Rockville, MD. The candidate will operate in a multi-disciplinary group of computational biologists, software developers, and operations staff who provide support, training, consultation services and informatics tools to the research community in the areas of computational biosciences. They will have advanced skills in data visualization, 3D design, experience with 3D technologies (including virtual reality, and augmented reality), and an interest in the area of the biological sciences.

This position requires a minimum of 3 days per week on site at the NIAID 5601 Fishers Lane office.

What You Will Do :
  • Support day-to-day activities in the NIAID Biovisualization Lab, including hosting of consultation sessions with NIAID investigators, program officers, and staff, and facilitating ideation and collaboration sessions.
  • Incorporate advanced 3D data visualization and analysis tools, including VR, AR, and large-scale data presentation tools, with a special emphasis on those relating to SARS-CoV-2 to support NIAID 3D printing and biovisualization services for the NIH research community.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts in communicating concepts using 3D models in a digital environment and/or as 3D prints.
  • Contribute to the development of new and existing software, including the NIH 3D model repository and visualization platform, and the PathogenAR mobile app.
  • Assist with preparation of materials and content to effectively demonstrate concepts and practices in and data visualization, virtual and augmented reality tools and methods for the NIH scientific community, and the public.
  • Research and facilitate adoption of new and emerging tools for data science and 3D visualization that keep NIAID/OCICB on the leading edge of biovisualization technology to advance NIAID intramural research and support extramural program activities.
  • Optimize, maintain, and adhere to SOPs and standards of quality.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What You Will Need :
  • Bachelors Degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience using advanced knowledge of methods and applications related to 3D data visualization, virtual and augmented reality tools and development, and visualization of large-scale, multidimensional datasets.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex bioscientific information.
  • Skill in verbal communications to effectively engage with expert and lay audiences on bioscientific and health-related concepts and to establish effective relationships with individuals at all levels both within and outside the organization.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new methods.
  • High degree of initiative and personal judgment.


What Would Be Nice To Have :
  • Bachelors Degrees in Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Digital Arts, or Engineering
  • Preferred candidates will have knowledge in four or more of the following subject areas:
    • Virtual, augmented, or mixed reality development frameworks or devices.
    • Software development (Unity, Python, PHP, XML, JSON; version control with Git).
    • Molecular and structural biology
    • Segmentation of DICOM-formatted data from medical imaging modalities (CT, MRI, Ultrasound, etc.);
    • Web-based 3D visualization
    • Experience using large-scale displays for presenting data.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience with two or more of the following applications: Unity, Blender, Maya, 3DS Max, Cinema4D, ZBrush, Imaris, Mimics.
  • Familiarity with the NIH organizational structure, its goals, objectives, programs, and policies desired.
  • Familiarity with research programs conducted at NIH Institutes, private and non-profit institutions desired.
