DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under direct supervision/leadership, responsible for moderately skilled technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of a Motorola P25 radio communications network, subscriber radio devices, dispatch consoles, and fire station alerting equipment. Provides rotating on-call service work; program voice and data radio communications equipment; work with vendors on the maintenance and repair of all radio users; repair and maintain Fire Alerting System (FSA); perform preventive maintenance at all radio tower sites, dispatch centers, and FSA fire station equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment. The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as servers or routers (up to 40 pounds) and/or stooping, bending, very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There may be sources of discomfort, i.e., outdoor installations, hot/cold temperatures, and humid/wet conditions. Hands-on environment. Have rotating on-call responsibilities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Requires an Associate's degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.
System-specific technical certifications may be considered a substitution for Associate s degree.
EXPERIENCE
Entry level position; does not require work experience.
LICENSE
A valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
Preferences will be given to applicants with working knowledge of:
Public Safety Communications radio operations utilizing a Motorola P25 trunked radio system.
Knowledge of FCC Rules & Regulations and radio programming.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, computer/PC operation skills.
Ability to accurately troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and make rapid and sound decisions and notifications of appropriate staff.
Ability to operate technical and computer test equipment.
Microsoft Server/vSphere Certifications.
Proficient at radio installations and repair of antennas, antenna lines, DC power.
Preferences will also be given to individuals who prove completion of technical training courses in modern electronic technology. Experienced with voltmeter, watt meter, or service monitor.
Certified Electronics Technician (C.E.T.) & General Communications Technician Certifications are highly desired.
