Salary: $50.00 USD Hourly - $75.00 USD Hourly
Description: Our client is currently seeking a SQL DBA
This role includes architecting and managing complex Availability Groups, supporting critical manufacturing applications where downtime may result in multimillion-dollar impact, contributing to global database strategy, and completing advanced troubleshooting across SQL Server environments spanning multiple regions.
The consultant will work under IT leadership and interface with global infrastructure, applications, manufacturing IT, and quality/compliance stakeholders.
Scope of Work / Responsibilities
1. SQL Server Architecture, Engineering & Administration
Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server environments (SQL 2000-2022) in on-prem and virtualized infrastructures.
Architect and support Always On Availability Groups for high-availability, cross-site, and multi-node configurations.
Design, document, and enhance database topology for global NA/EU environments.
Lead efforts to standardize SQL Server configuration, security, and operational practices across international sites.
Support database design, indexing strategies, schema management, and capacity planning.
2. High Availability, Recoverability & Disaster Recovery
Implement and administer:
Always On AGs
Multi-node clusters
Native backups
Avamar, Symantec, DoubleTake, or similar backup tooling
Develop and execute recovery strategies for highly critical, time-sensitive manufacturing systems where data loss is unacceptable.
Perform DR testing, failover validation, and recovery exercises in compliance with quality and IT standards.
3. Performance Tuning & Advanced Troubleshooting
Identify and resolve issues related to blocking, deadlocks, performance degradation, corruption, and complex SQL behavior.
Optimize queries, indexes, statistics, execution plans, and server-level performance.
Use PowerShell, T-SQL, custom scripts, and monitoring tools to proactively identify issues.
Evaluate, test, and implement global monitoring systems and alerting frameworks.
4. GxP, Compliance & Validated Environment Support
(FDB is a GxP-regulated manufacturing environment; consultant must work within validated system frameworks.)
Ensure database changes follow change control, audit, and documentation standards.
Support Computer System Validation (CSV) deliverables for database components.
Maintain auditability, traceability, and documented procedures for regulated systems.
Work collaboratively with Quality and Compliance teams during validation and inspection cycles.
5. Global Operations & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a senior technical escalation point for all NA/EU SQL Server environments.
Partner with application, infrastructure, manufacturing IT, and platform teams to support system integrations and migrations.
Participate in project teams for upgrades, application releases, system migrations, and environment redesigns.
Support migration planning from legacy or multi-instance configurations into modernized, application-aligned deployments.
6. Scripting, Automation & Tooling
Develop and maintain PowerShell and T-SQL automation scripts for monitoring, remediation, backup management, and operational tasks.
Execute data migrations (SQL ? SQL, Oracle ? SQL, MySQL ? SQL, etc.) as needed.
Implement and maintain internal monitoring and reporting frameworks (e.g., Brent Ozar First Responder Kit, custom in-house dashboards).
Required Skills & Experience
8-12+ years as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments.
Deep expertise with SQL Server 2000-2022 in large, distributed, multi-instance ecosystems.
Proven experience with Always On Availability Groups, clustering, and cross-site HA/DR designs.
Advanced troubleshooting across locking, blocking, corruption, performance tuning, deadlocks, and SQL engine internals.
Strong T-SQL, PowerShell scripting, and automation skills.
Experience supporting manufacturing or regulated environments (GxP preferred).
Experience with monitoring and backup tools such as Avamar, Symantec, OEM scripts, Brent Ozar FRK, etc.
Experience managing 100-1000+ database migrations, upgrades, or consolidations.
Comfortable working with virtualized infrastructure (vSphere/VMware).
Deliverables
Updated, validated SQL Server architecture documentation for supported sites.
Stabilized and optimized SQL Server AG clusters and HA/DR configurations.
Database migration plans, upgrade runbooks, and execution support.
Monitoring enhancements, custom scripts, and performance baselines.
Change control documentation and validation artifacts as required.
Knowledge transfer to Fujifilm NA/EU DBA teams.
