Network Backbone Engineer

Job Title: Backbone Engineer (Contract)
Location: Palo Alto, CA / Memphis, TN
Duration: 3 6 Months

Role Overview
We are seeking a Backbone Engineer for a 3 6 month contract focused exclusively on Layer 1 backbone circuit activations. The engineer will coordinate and execute the turn-up of long-haul optical links critical to data center interconnect infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead daily conference bridge sessions with transport and data center vendors (Lumen, Zayo, Windstream, Equinix, QTS, Digital Realty, etc.) to bring up dark fiber and optical backbone circuits.
• Troubleshoot link activation issues, working through cross-carrier circuits and physical layer diagnostics.
• Validate connectivity between designated endpoints through optical light level testing and loopback verification.
• Execute and document testing procedures using provided change management and commissioning templates.
• Collaborate closely with the network operations team to ensure smooth transition of circuits into production.
• Maintain meticulous status tracking and vendor communication documentation.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in backbone or optical networking, ideally with exposure to long-haul transport systems.
• Strong understanding of Layer 1 and Layer 2 network fundamentals, optical transport technologies, and DWDM systems.
• Hands-on experience working with telecom carriers and data center providers.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills for managing multiple external vendor sessions simultaneously.
• Comfortable operating in fast-paced, highly technical environments with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in hyperscale or data center interconnect environments.
• Familiarity with cross-connect and LOA/CFA processes.
• Working knowledge of change management frameworks and documentation best practices.
