About Rivian
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
This engineer will serve as a Closures Design & Release Engineer for our Sealing team. In this role, you will have end-to-end responsibility for designing, developing, and releasing sealing systems and components for various vehicle closures. You will have the opportunity to manage the components development process from concept through production, including supplier engagement, BOM management, validation, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Cradle to grave responsibility for design and development of weather-strip and sealing systems relevant to closures. This includes Hoods, Fenders, Side Doors, Tailgates, and Liftgates
Areas of product expertise include dynamic sealing, glass run sealing, glass guidance, appliques, anti-pinch sensors, mechanisms, and any other closures relevant experience.
Responsible for component release for closures sealing components throughout program lifecycle, including concept design, supplier engagement, BOM management, systems requirements, CAE, prototyping builds, validation testing, and production support (manufacturing, Studio, PQ and craftsmanship involvement)
Support all supplier selection and development with heavy interface to purchasing
Develop and manage your part system, subsystem, and component information through the Enovia PLM to Catia V6 environment to achieve targets for performance, quality, cost, investment, and weight
Engage in debate and discussions during all Vehicle Hardware and Closures design reviews as a stakeholder and representative of closures sealing
Apply studio designer input, design guidelines and lessons learned in early development to improve the product and prevent issues.
Make updates to requirements, performance specifications, DVP&Rs, and other processes for continuous improvement.
Mentor other less experienced engineers
Be a champion of good, fundamental design in the body system and across the vehicle
Qualifications
B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
5+ years of experience within the automotive industry (ideally OEM or Tier 1) as a Design Release Engineer or equivalent, including at least one full product lifecycle from concept through production
Ability to self-direct and adapt quickly to program changes
Knowledge of an automotive design and development process, system requirements, and general engineering best practices
Experience leading complete sealing systems development effort. Understanding of the tradeoffs among design, package, function, and customer experience involved with these systems
3D CAD design experience for closures systems or related vehicle components - CATIA V5 and/or V6 experience preferred but not required
An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a team - specifically this means active brainstorming and working on components that are not part of closures sealing as required to support the changing needs of an evolving vehicle and work environment
A strong understanding of the first-principle physics of a closures system -loads, forces, and overall function of the system
Working knowledge of regulatory and certification requirements
Familiarity with typical manufacturing materials and processes utilized in closures sealing design - EPDM, TPV, coatings, metals, plastics, composite, extrusion, injection molding, stamping, roll-forming, stretch-bending, for example - and associated design requirements associated with these materials and processes
A system approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for continuous improvement.
