Roles & Responsibilities

Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced AWS Cloud Infrastructure Architect with strong OpenSearch and DevOps expertise to lead a large-scale Elasticsearch to OpenSearch migration. This role is central to modernizing our search platform while ensuring zero downtime, high availability, security, and operational excellence.
You will design and execute the cloud infrastructure and migration strategy, working closely with application teams, SREs, and DevOps engineers. This is a hands-on architecture role combining cloud infrastructure design, search platform expertise, and DevOps-driven automation.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and implement a highly available, secure search platform on AWS using Amazon OpenSearch Service.
  • Lead a zero-downtime migration from self-managed Elasticsearch (7.x/8.x) to OpenSearch.
  • Design and implement migration strategies including snapshot & restore, dual writes, shadow reads, and weighted traffic cutover.
  • Use AWS Migration Assistant to assess compatibility, identify gaps, and guide remediation.
  • Design OpenSearch index strategies including shard sizing, replicas, ISM policies, and security configurations.
  • Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and search platform changes.
  • Ensure data integrity, performance, and relevance parity throughout migration.
  • Optimize performance, reliability, observability, and cost across the search platform.
  • Partner with engineering teams to migrate clients, queries, and ingestion pipelines.
  • Establish monitoring, alerting, backup, and disaster recovery for OpenSearch.
  • Communicate risks, progress, and architectural decisions to stakeholders.

What You'll Bring

  • 8+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps architecture.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with Elasticsearch internals and OpenSearch production operations.
  • Practical experience with OpenSearch features such as ISM, built-in security, plugins, and dashboards.
  • Solid experience with AWS services including EC2, EBS, S3, IAM, KMS, VPC, and CloudWatch.
  • Strong DevOps experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience with configuration management and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes preferred).
  • Proven experience executing Elasticsearch-to-OpenSearch migrations in production.
  • Deep understanding of zero-downtime migration patterns, data validation, and rollback strategies.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for distributed systems.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating on-prem Elasticsearch to AWS/OpenSearch.
  • Experience operating large-scale OpenSearch or Elasticsearch clusters in production.
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, or similar streaming platforms.
  • Experience with monitoring stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, or CloudWatch.
  • AWS Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer certification (preferred).

What Success Looks Like

  • Elasticsearch to OpenSearch migration completed with zero downtime and no data loss.
  • OpenSearch platform meets or exceeds performance, reliability, and security expectations.
  • DevOps automation in place for provisioning, deployment, monitoring, and recovery.
  • Legacy Elasticsearch infrastructure fully decommissioned.
  • Clear documentation, run books, and operational ownership established.
