POSITION SUMMARY:
The IBM iSeries Systems Engineer is responsible for monitoring, configuring, and maintaining the IBM Power Systems infrastructure. This role focuses on the operational health, data protection, and high availability of mission-critical applications running on IBM i. The Systems Engineer develops and follows standard operating procedures and supports both routine and complex system issues, with a focus on performance, automation, and continuous service availability.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers and supports IBM Power Systems (Power10/Power9) infrastructure, including HMC and virtualized environments (VIO).
- Maintains IBM i OS environments, performing upgrades, patch management, and system tuning.
- Oversees BRMS backups, IBM FlashCopy, immutable backups, Cybernetics VTLs, and IBM TS4300 tape libraries.
- Supports and maintains high availability configurations using IBM PowerHA solutions.
- Manages IBM FlashSystem 9500 storage and integrates with backup and recovery workflows.
- Utilizes CLI to administer hardware and software, including HMC, VIO, switches, and storage systems.
- Performs capacity planning, disaster recovery testing, and system health monitoring.
- Provides Tier 2 and 3 support and resolution of IT issues related to IBM i infrastructure.
- Works closely with vendors and third-party support providers (e.g., Fortra, PowerTech) to ensure continuous improvement and resolve escalated incidents.
- Develops and maintains system documentation and standard operating procedures.
- Participates in audits and supports compliance requirements with a focus on system security and access control.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with IBM Power Systems (Power10/Power9), IBM i OS 7.4.
- Demonstrated experience with IBM BRMS, PowerHA, PowerTech, and Fortra suite of tools.
- Strong understanding of IBM virtualization and storage solutions, including FlashSystem, FlashCopy, and VTL technologies.
- Experience using CLI for HMC, VIO server management, and Brocade switch administration.
- Familiarity with Robot automation and scheduling tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across storage, OS, and networking layers.
- Strong vendor management and communication skills.
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and present technical information.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience supporting IBM i infrastructure in an enterprise setting.
- Minimum of 2 years managing IBM PowerHA, BRMS, storage, and backup technologies.
