Business Title: Principal Engineer
Position Description
Function

The Principal Engineer provides extensive systematic level technical services to clients with need for industry or technology expertise and provides both vision and direction in identifying and developing business opportunity for the company, policy support, and mentoring to subordinate engineers and staff.
Core Responsibilities
Task Level Execution
  • Provide extensive systematic level proficiency and knowledge in specific technical areas or businesses that enables them to serve as highest level resource for the company in those areas.
  • Identify, resolve and initiate solutions to highly complex problems that require extensive specialized knowledge or the development of knowledge or techniques.
  • Coordinate work activities that affect the quality of administration, proposals, engineering & design, document control, inspection & testing, and commissioning in accordance with Salas O'Brien's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Lead engineering activity related to areas of engineering and, as a recognized authority, influence Salas O'Brien's thinking in areas of expertise.
  • Develop and implement plans to achieve objectives in field of expertise.
  • Demonstrate vision and facility in identifying business opportunities for the company.
  • Lead facilitate, and coordinate work activity of others including other Salas O'Brien employees, customers, suppliers and alliances at the project, office or client level.
  • Develop, review, recommend and implement plans that involve scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and project control.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate corrective action to address shortcomings in design or engineering processes that run counter to customer's or Salas O'Brien's quality or safety requirements. Support root cause assessments and recommend practical solutions to underlying problems.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or deemed appropriate of the position by management.

  • Maintain high level contacts within industry or areas of technical expertise.
  • Seeks out, build and maintain professional networks and alliances.

Continuous Improvement of Technical Skills
  • Keep abreast of new products, processes, and technology.
Scope and Accountability
  • Make and or promote decisions at a level likely to impact Salas O'Brien business plan objectives and be key in assuring achievement of the Salas O'Brien Strategic Plan.
  • Possess the knowledge and authority to make and assume full authority for technical decisions.
  • Incumbent is accountable to the Department Manager, Operations Manager, and Senior Leadership for the proper execution of their professional responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements

Bachelors or advanced degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences with thirty or more years' experience in the field of expertise or related fields. It is generally expected that the incumbent will have a PE license and that they will be generally recognized as expert in their field or specialization.
Work Environment
  • Office environment, construction area or factory floor environment not requiring the lifting or moving of heavy loads.
  • May require climbing ladders, scaffolding and working significantly above ground elevation
  • May involve working in a high noise ambient, elevated temperatures, dust, dirt, and hazardous chemicals requiring protective clothing.
  • Work may involve traveling to customer's facilities. A valid driver's license or other assured means of transportation to job sites is essential.

Safety
