Job Title: PHP Hands-On Architect Legacy System Modernization Job Type: Contract Location: Remote or Onsite in Stamford, CT (some on-site preferred)

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced PHP Hands-On Architect with Development Capabilities to lead the modernization of a legacy PHP server application.
This system is currently outdated and requires a comprehensive upgrade to align with the latest PHP standards, security protocols, and compliance requirements. This is a contract opportunity and is open to both independent contractors and consulting firms with proven PHP architecture and legacy migration experience.

Project Scope: The core objective of this engagement is to:


  • Assess the current legacy PHP codebase and server setup.
  • Design and implement a robust architecture for modernization.
  • Upgrade code to be compatible with the latest PHP version (8.x).
  • Ensure adherence to modern coding standards (PSR, Composer, etc.).
  • Improve security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Facilitate transition to a more modular, testable structure (MVC or similar frameworks preferred).
  • Recommend and apply best practices for long-term scalability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform in-depth analysis of legacy PHP systems.
  • Create a migration and upgrade roadmap with clear milestones.
  • Rewrite/refactor legacy code where necessary.
  • Integrate modern PHP libraries and tools (e.g., Composer, PHPUnit).
  • Set up automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and version control best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal development teams to transfer knowledge.
  • Provide documentation and architecture guidance.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of PHP development experience, including architecture roles.
  • Strong knowledge of legacy PHP versions and upgrade paths to PHP 8.x.
  • Familiarity with PHP-FPM, Apache/Nginx, MySQL, and modern DevOps tools.
  • Experience with MVC frameworks (Laravel, Symfony, or similar) is a plus.
  • Proven track record of successful legacy system upgrades or refactors.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
