What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead the Lab's enterprise-wide information technology strategy, operations, and digital innovation. The CIO reports directly to the Laboratory Associate Director for Business Management (ALDBUS) and provides strategic oversight for all IT, cybersecurity, data management, and digital initiatives across the institution.

The CIO is accountable for defining and delivering IT capabilities that support the Lab's national security and scientific missions. This includes leadership over data analytics, business intelligence, enterprise application development and support, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and technical services. The role requires a strong focus on operational excellence, innovation, and building collaborative relationships across the organization to position IT as a mission enabler.

This position manages approximately $200 million in annual IT operating costs and investments and leads an organization of over 1,100 IT professionals dedicated to supporting the Laboratory's complex and evolving technology needs.

Key Responsibilities for the position include:

• Develop and implement enterprise-wide IT strategy aligned with mission and operational goals
• Lead and modernize legacy systems, infrastructure, and cloud migration efforts
• Ensure cybersecurity compliance with federal regulations (FISMA, FedRAMP, Zero Trust Architecture, etc.)
• Promote data governance, analytics, and high-performance computing capabilities
• Oversee IT budgets, acquisitions, and workforce planning
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and customer service across diverse scientific and operational stakeholders

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Executive Leadership Experience:

• Senior-level experience in a federal agency, national laboratory, or scientific research institution.
• Proven success leading large, multidisciplinary IT teams, programs, and managing complex budgets.

Strategic and Technical Expertise:

• Demonstrated experience developing and executing a strategic vision for IT that aligns with organizational goals.
• Deep understanding of data-intensive environments, research computing, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
• Successful program development experience with the U.S. Department of Energy or other federal agencies.

Communication and Collaboration:

• Strong track record of working collaboratively with diverse leaders to communicate IT strategies and build consensus around key initiatives.
• Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; able to effectively engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Excellent negotiation skills with internal and external partners.

Team and Talent Leadership:

• Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, and inspire high-performing IT teams with a focus on transparency, accountability, and service.
• Demonstrated ability to build trust and foster strong relationships across organizational levels through integrity and professionalism.

Business Acumen and Operational Understanding:

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Working knowledge of key business and IT functions, including human resources, acquisition services, software applications, network infrastructure, desktop support, data centers (or VTRs), records management, document control, and project portfolio management.

Adaptability and Professional Integrity:

• Comfortable operating in dynamic, high-stakes environments and managing ambiguity with flexibility and composure.
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in business operations and IT service delivery, with a consistent focus on innovation and mission enablement.

Education

Bachelor's in computer science or information technology or related field (masters preferred) plus a minimum of 15 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. A master's in information management or business management is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in a CIO or equivalent position.
• An active Q or TS/SCI clearance.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

* Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
