Remote API Architect (Mortgage)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking an API Architect for a remote role. This person shouldhave deep expertise in event-driven architecture, API design, and modern PHP frameworks (Laravel preferred) or .NET, to lead modernization efforts across our mortgage technology stack. This role will focus on decoupling legacy systems, integrating with third-party platforms and driving the transition from AWS to Azure. Experience in mortgage experience is required. The Architect will work across multiple teams to define and implement scalable, maintainable integration strategies that abstract complexity and improve customer experience. This is a hybrid role combining 25-50% hands-on coding with architectural leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
* Architect and implement event-driven systems using message queues (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka, EventBridge) to decouple services and improve scalability
* Lead the modernization of PHP applications, including containerization and migration to Laravel or transition to C#/.NET over the next 5-7 years
* Design and document integration strategies with third-party platforms, ensuring clean API boundaries and abstraction layers
* Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, and product teams to define reference architectures and enforce best practices
* Translate complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions, especially in mortgage industry
* Guide the development of RESTful APIs and middleware to absorb third-party complexity and streamline internal development
* Provide architectural mentorship and influence across teams, helping developers understand domain-driven design and integration patterns
* Contribute to and review technical documentation, ensuring clarity and consistency across teams
* Engage in cross-functional planning, solution design, and technical leadership to ensure alignment with long-term modernization goals

REQUIREMENTS:
* 7+ years of experience in software architecture or senior development roles
* Strong experience with event-driven architecture, message queues, and asynchronous systems
* Proficiency in modern PHP (Laravel preferred) or .NET/C# with a willingness to transition between them
* Deep understanding of API integration, middleware design, and system decoupling
* Experience in the mortgage industry, particularly in capital markets, loan servicing, or POS platforms
* Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)
* Strong communication skills and ability to lead through influence and technical expertise
* Ability to produce and maintain architectural documentation and reference materials

Preferred Experience:
* Experience working with or replacing legacy PHP systems
* Familiarity with mortgage servicing platforms
* Exposure to domain-driven design and microservices
* Experience with identity management and authentication protocols is a plus

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
