Each day U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) oversees the massive flow of people, capital, and products that enter and depart the United States via air, land, sea, and cyberspace. The volume and complexity of both physical and virtual border crossings require the application of solutions to aid officers in detecting threats while promoting efficient trade and travel.

The strongest applicant will have a proven track record of delivering production ready enterprise applications employed in the field and by mission-support entities. In this critical role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining complex applications and services. You will leverage your expertise across the entire technology stack, with a strong focus on robust backend development using Java, while also contributing significantly to front-end implementation. In addition, you will leverage your expertise in modern software development practices, including comprehensive unit testing, efficient version control, and implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to ensure high-quality, automated software delivery. As an SME member, you will also play a key role in architectural decisions, mentoring junior developers, and driving best practices within the team

Applicants should note that while some formal training exists to support building knowledge of missions and the implementation of data-driven solutions, much of the knowledge must be gained through on-the-job training and individual initiative. Technical knowledge is insufficient to establish credibility in this operating environment; expertise must be enhanced with rapid acquisition of mission knowledge and demonstrated commitment positive mission outcomes; therefore, we seek self-starters who are capable of independent exploration and knowledge acquisition, willing to develop informal support networks, and with an appreciation for the immense challenge of safeguarding the Nation s borders.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Lead and perform development and maintenance of end-user focused, object-oriented, data-driven analytic applications to support CBP threat analysis and targeting in an agile environment.
  • Design, develop, and implement scalable, high-performance and reliable applications and microservices using Java (including frameworks like Spring Boot, Jakarta etc.) for the backend and modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Vue.js) for the frontend.
  • Contribute to all phases of the software engineering lifecycle (SELC), including requirements gathering, architecture design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Develop and consume RESTful APIs and ensure seamless integration between front-end and backend systems.

Develop new code, modify existing application code, conduct unit and system testing, and engage in rigorous documentation of developed and delivered application use cases, data flows, and functional operations.

  • Develop, manage, and optimize CI/CD pipelines (e.g. using Jenkins, Gitlab CI, Harness) for automated builds, testing, and deployments.
  • Demonstrate a strong practical understanding to integrate rapid deployment process of AI/ML services into application delivery framework for targeting.
