The department of Veterinary Medicine Information Technology (VMIT) provides strategic leadership and oversight, support and services, planning and implementation of Information Technology throughout the College of Veterinary Medicine. VMIT supports five college academic departments, administration, Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) including several remote labs, and Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA). VMIT is responsible for over 150 custom products supporting the college of veterinary medicine.

The Opportunity

The application programmer will be an integral member of the VMIT DevOps Group, working closely with units at the college. This position is responsible for the software engineering component for reliability and well architected solutions as well as operational responsibilities of our product portfolio. The software engineer will provide exceptional customer service to internal and external clients at all times, while working collaboratively with the team, and will actively support the mission and goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine

General Responsibilities:

  • Work with and may be responsible to users for needs analysis and provide resolution for software systems.
  • Develop a detailed program specification through discussion with clients, users and stakeholders.
  • Design, analyze, code, test, debug, document and maintain complex systems; develop enhancements that enable a positive end-user experience.
  • Formulate, define system scope and objectives to develop or modify complex software systems.
  • Analyze and amend software errors in a timely and accurate fashion and provide status reports where required.
  • Define projects, organize a project team and direct project activities; provide technical guidance to less experienced programmer/ analyst; may instruct, direct and check the work of other application developers.
  • Research, analyze, design, document, and modify software specifications throughout the production life cycle.
  • Create and implements project specifications/plans for projects with significant inter-dependency with other third party systems and/or projects.
  • Develop or modify procedures to solve complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time and form of desired results.
  • Develop, validate test routines and schedules, and evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.

What We Need

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree in computer science, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • More than three (3) years of software engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with TypeScript.
  • Proficiency with Angular.
  • Proficiency with NodeJS.
  • Proficiency with front end development including single page applications.
  • Proficiency with API development using REST or GraphQL.
  • Database expertise and skills using SQL in MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL and more.
  • Experience with cloud providers such as AWS.
  • Ability to determine, recommend and advise technical direction for applications based on functional requirements, industry trends, and strategic technical architecture.
  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills to evaluate and solve highly complex issues across multiple applications, databases and systems.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex data professionally to varying audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, successful management of simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Works well both individually and within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AWS services such as RDS, S3, EKS and more.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration tools.

  • Experience with infrastructure as code tooling such as terraform or ansible.
  • Experience using continuous integration and continuous delivery tools.
  • Knowledge of data science tooling specifically generative AI concepts and applications.
