Job Summary
A regional higher education institution is seeking a creative, analytical, and innovative Senior Database Administrator to join its Information Technology team. This role is responsible for database design and administration, supporting cloud migration initiatives, and maintaining a high level of data integrity and performance. The position plays a critical part in enhancing the institution s digital infrastructure and ensuring a high-quality user experience for students, faculty, and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Design, administer, and optimize on-premises and cloud-based databases.
Lead efforts to develop and document database architecture and data lake solutions.
Support data migration using ETL tools and Azure services.
Collaborate with developers, analysts, and system administrators on product and data quality.
Mentor junior staff on database best practices and Azure platform tools.
Ensure adherence to data governance and security standards.
Participate in on-call support rotations and troubleshoot critical database issues.
Support the design and automation of testing processes through Azure DevOps.
Break down technical requirements into manageable tasks and deliverables.
Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (required).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in database administration, with direct experience in Azure environments.
Demonstrated experience in data architecture, cloud migrations, and ETL implementations.
Special Requirements
Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or equivalent (preferred).
Ability to pass a background check in accordance with institutional policies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of SQL Server, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, NoSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, Redshift, BigQuery, S3, and DevOps tools.
Proficient in scripting languages for data integration and automation.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to conduct root cause analysis and create architecture diagrams.
Effective verbal and written communication skills across technical and business audiences.
Skilled in mentoring team members and communicating across multiple departments.
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Additional Desired Characteristics
Experience designing and supporting a data lake ecosystem.
Familiarity with DBAAS (Database as a Service) environments.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and customer-focused environment.
Demonstrated ability to challenge the status quo and promote innovation.
Experience in higher education or public sector environments is a plus.
Work Environment
This position can be performed remotely. Candidates from across the region are encouraged to apply.
Occasional travel may be required for team meetings or special projects.
