Job Details

Join Tesla in building the power system of the future with clean, sustainable energy! Help design, model, and integrate our battery storage to accelerate this green energy transformation.Tesla is looking for electrical engineers to enhance our in-house Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) testing capabilities for energy storage, solar, and electric charging systems at mass scale. You will collaborate with utilities, independent power providers, and system operators in technical power systems discussions, influencing system design to enable seamless grid scaling. Responsibilities include maintaining the CHIL setup, automating testing workflows, and developing/testing control strategies for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in utility and microgrid applications. This role is dynamic, cross-functional, and spans electrical engineering, control systems, and grid operations.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) testing to validate control behavior against design specifications and project requirements
  • Develop and maintain test setups, automate processes, and ensure efficient studies with well-organized indexing/documentation of large datasets
  • Design and validate controls for diverse utility requirements. Integrate control elements and create test plans to ensure grid stability and compliance with utility standards
  • Identify and resolve control and communication issues using first-principles analysis
  • Partner with product design and control teams to align simulation models with Tesla's technology roadmap

Requirements
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, Robotics or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in building and maintaining hardware-software integrated setups. Strong debugging skill for test setups is required
  • Strong foundation in electrical principles, circuit theory, and control systems
  • Proficiency in automation scripting and control design using at least one programming language: Python, C, or C++
  • Expertise in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate findings concisely and collaborate cross-functionally with customers, engineers, business development, and deployment teams
  • Prior hands-on experience with network switches/protocols, oscilloscopes, and real-time simulation platforms (e.g., RTDS, Typhoon HIL, RTAC, Opal-RT) is a plus
