What You Will Do
The Engineering and Technology Maturation (ETM) organization is looking for R&D Engineers that will support the ETM Program Office by providing technical leadership for ETM at LANL and for the broader DOE community.
The ETM Program resides under the associate Laboratory Director for Weapon Physics (ALDX) and conducts research to improve America's ability to rapidly design, produce, qualify, and certify nuclear weapons. The main goals of ETM are to 1) Develop, mature, and integrate technologies and capabilities for the future nuclear deterrent 2) Build and test prototypes and apply lessons learned to future activities & 3) Rapidly bring proven technologies, capabilities, and prototypes together to address urgent and future nuclear deterrence needs. To that end, ETM is focused on developing modeling and simulation tools, testing capabilities, weapon technologies, materials, explosives and surveillance methods for weapon systems to assure production, qualification and certification in the absence of underground nuclear testing.
The successful candidates will report directly to the ETM Program Director to ensure alignment with LANL and Federal programmatic priorities. As a R&D Engineer you will lead system integration efforts for flight testing and joint integrated experiments. Additionally, the position will lead efforts for advanced system level concepts to include evaluating weapons effects based on specific mission profiles. The position will also serve as a technical interface for discussions with DoD and NNSA sponsors with regards to future system development. You will collaborate with individual scientists and engineers, project leaders, line managers and other program managers (e.g., OES, ASC, DSW, etc.), to develop and execute the program plans that are both integrated and effective.

Technical Skills:
Thorough knowledge and expertise leading nuclear weapon's design, science, and engineering as evidenced by programmatic contributions, publications, and/or recognition within the LANL scientific and weapon's communities. Additionally, you must also possess a strong understanding of systems engineering and integration activities with demonstrated success in both performing and leading complex scientific endeavors.
Engineering Expertise:
Demonstrated experience in an engineering discipline such as mechanical, system, materials, and or/ aeronautical. Demonstrated success at project development, planning, advocacy, resource allocation, management, execution, tracking, reporting and customer interactions. You must have the ability to set priorities and proven strength in decision making.
Teamwork/Communications:
Advanced ability to facilitate successful teamwork and consensus building across organizational and program boundaries. This includes excellent interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by successful internal and external interactions through briefings, presentations, and writings, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel. Additionally, you must possess the ability to coordinate and integrate the Program across our national laboratories, working to eliminate unnecessary redundancy, while maintaining required capabilities.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
