The Managing Director (MD) of Fleet Engineering is responsible for leading the avionics engineering, structures engineering, systems engineering and component engineering teams to support United's global fleet of aircraft. This role will be responsible for driving airworthiness and continuous improvements to reduce delays and cancellations, determining engineering solutions for out-of-service aircraft and upgrading our fleets, as well as supporting our suppliers and internal component repair shops. This MD will own the strategy for United's Fleet Engineering teams, managing AOG support with the OEMs and proposing solutions for United's fleet and business needs. This MD is expected to work cross-functionally across United Tech Ops for problem resolution and continuous improvements.

This function is a critical role within United's Engineering & Reliability organization within United Technical Operations and the MD will be required to provide regular updates to senior leaders.

The MD role is based in CSC (Chicago).

Performance driven - develop and maintain reliability and maintenance programs that appropriately balances safety, customer experience, mechanical defects, and economic concerns to prioritize areas of f ocus. Establishes aggressive goals for performance improvement and achieves desired results. Evaluates the ongoing analysis of non-routine findings, reliability data and the effectiveness of maintenance programs and provide recommendations for improvements as necessary.

Team development - fosters an environment that encourages learning; promotes a culture of innovation, agility, inclusion, and teamwork. Provides overall leadership, oversight, and direction to the teams to ensure effective and efficient maintenance and reliability programs

Lead by influence - guides and prioritizes the work performed by other departments within United Airlines including Reliability, Maintenance, Planning, Supply Chain, Engineering, Digital Technology and others. Collaborate with key suppliers to deliver practical, on-time solutions to United Airlines.

Strategic and tactical focus - responsible for resolving out of service aircraft and aircraft in base maintenance for United's global fleet. Develop action plans to address specific systems and/or specific aircraft within a fleet by identifying, investigating, and resolving problems that impact operational performance and providing feedback to the engineering and maintenance program teams for improvements based on the operational performance.

Compliance - ensures the organization meets or exceeds the relevant maintenance requirements, reliability programs and reporting requirements contained in United Airlines General Maintenance Manual, Title 14 of Code of Federal Regulations, and associated FAA guidance material

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, mathematics or related fields

12+ years of related experience

3+ years leading technical teams

Substantial experience in aircraft or aerospace engineering or equivalent

Knowledge and experience in aircraft line or base maintenance

Preferred:

Master's degree in a related field

15+ years of related experience

5+ years leading technical teams

Airframe & Powerplant license

Six Sigma Black Belt

Apollo Root Cause analysis or equivalent

Knowledge and experience in manufacturing or repair shops
