Location: 100% remote; candidates must have home office.
Duration: 6 months with the opportunity for extension

ABOUT

We re seeking a highly experienced IBM Z/OS Assembler Consultant to support the modernization of our client's legacy mainframe application designed for I/O processing and indexing. Originally built to overcome physical tape limitations, this system now requires modernization to align with current technologies.

The ideal candidate is a Senior Mainframe Expert who can work independently, maintain existing Assembler code, and help translate complex logic into modern solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain, enhance, and modernize legacy IBM Z/OS Assembler code.

  • Analyze and document existing I/O processing and indexing logic.

  • Collaborate on re-architecting and mapping Assembler logic to modern languages (e.g., Java).

  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and support system performance.

  • Provide technical guidance and documentation for modernization efforts.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years of hands-on IBM Z/OS Assembler experience.

  • Strong knowledge of assembly instructions, addressing modes, and data manipulation.

  • Expertise in JCL, system calls (SVCs), interrupt handling, and storage hierarchy.

  • Proficiency with mainframe tools (debuggers, assemblers, linkers, utilities).

  • Understanding of object-oriented concepts and ability to map Assembler logic to modern constructs.

  • Experience with mainframe I/O hardware, tape processing, and modernization initiatives.

  • Self-starter able to work autonomously in complex environments.
