Job Details

The Microsoft Surface Devices team is on a mission to deliver iconic end-to-end products across hardware, software, and services that people trust and rely on every day. Central to this mission is ensuring the security and integrity of our devices, especially in the development of embedded firmware. The Surface team is hiring Software Engineers to build secure, desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want. (Software Engineer II and Senior Software Engineer positions are available.)

As a Software Engineer on the Surface team, you will work on Windows Drivers (kernel and user-mode) and Windows Services for Surface Devices. You will be responsible for partnering closely with electrical engineers, system engineers, firmware engineers and architects forfeature definition and implementation, delivering product designs that are optimized for high volume consumer products. You will be responsible for executing on a cutting-edge roadmap partnering closely with system architects, IHVs, and Windows OS teams. Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware for new and existing products.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration of UEFI firmware with system components.
  • Debug and resolve firmware issues, ensuring high reliability and performance.
  • Optimize firmware for power, performance, and security.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest UEFI specifications and industry trends.
  • Document firmware design and implementation details.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, Rust, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of professional experience designing and developing UEFI firmware.
  • 1+ year(s) experience working with hardware devices and/or debugging.
  • Deep understanding of system architecture, including CPU, memory, and peripheral interfaces.
  • Knowledge of security features and best practices in firmware development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with industry-standard firmware development tools and environments: Knowledge of tools such as EDK II, TianoCore, and other UEFI development environments.
  • Knowledge of ACPI, PCIe, USB, and other system interfaces: Understanding of Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe), Universal Serial Bus (USB), and other relevant system interfaces.
  • Experience with secure boot and trusted platform technologies: Familiarity with secure boot processes, Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and other security-related technologies.
  • Experience in reviewing hardware schematics.
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year. Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
