Job Duties
The Information Technology Unit provides technology planning and support to the Department to help insure the successful accomplishment of the Department's mission.
Manage and direct the Department of Information Technology's communications infrastructure, including enterprise networks, telecommunications, and data systems.
Lead planning, development, installation, operation, and maintenance of wired and wireless network services, network security, and telecommunications systems to ensure reliable, secure, and cost-effective service delivery. Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for network architecture, performance monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, and project implementation across the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
Thorough understanding and experience of WAN/LAN/WLAN architectures, Ethernet, TCP/IP, routing and switching, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, and wireless technologies; familiarity with network protocols and standards. Systems and platforms: Experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Microsoft/Office 365 services, virtualization (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), and common enterprise network hardware and OS platforms.
Security and compliance: Working knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia network security practices, intrusion detection/prevention, access control, encryption, and regulatory/security compliance requirements. Tools and troubleshooting: Proficient in Thousand Eyes and SevOne network monitoring and management tools, application performance analysis, capacity planning, and hands-on troubleshooting of network issues.
Project and vendor management: Ability to plan and manage infrastructure projects, develop requirements, evaluate RFS proposals, manage suppliers, and oversee implementation to meet schedule and budget. Leadership and communication: Strong supervisory skills, ability to lead technical staff and cross-functional teams, communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, prepare reports and recommendations, and provide excellent customer service. Analytical and problem-solving: Sound judgment in diagnosing problems, evaluating alternatives, and implementing effective technical and operational solutions. Continuous improvement: Commitment to staying current with emerging networking technologies, best practices, and industry standards.
