Senior Email Security Engineer (SMTP & Proofpoint Specialist) @ Onsite

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Senior Email Security Engineer to join our Email Security team. This crucial backfill position is integral to a cybersecurity project focused on enhancing our email security infrastructure and supporting critical applications and hosted relay channels. The core responsibilities of this role are heavily centered on Proofpoint technologies and complex SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) routing.

Key Responsibilities

As an integral part of the Email Security team, you will:

• Manage & Support Email Security Systems: Directly administer and secure our email environment using Proofpoint appliances (Hybrid POD and Backbone Sentrions).
• Lead SMTP & Mail Routing Initiatives: Drive projects related to SMTP configuration, mail flow, and routing changes, especially for a large volume of third-party vendors (approx. 900) sending outbound emails.
• Ensure Email Compliance & Security: Work on critical cybersecurity projects for application and hosted email relay channels, ensuring all outbound email (including third-party) adheres to DLP and scanning policies, and regulatory archiving requirements.
• Develop & Implement Policies: Create and implement policies for inbound email, manage quarantined messages, and support regulated archiving.
• Collaborate with Partners: Partner closely with internal application owners and external technical teams to ensure seamless and secure email routing.
• Troubleshooting & Resolution: Perform extensive research and troubleshooting for complex email and endpoint security issues, actively reviewing and correlating system logs (e.g., Splunk).
• Contribute to Engineering: Provide engineering support within the Email Security team, addressing support tickets and contributing to various initiatives.
• Utilize Key Tools: Work extensively with Proofpoint (including Cloudmark), Service Now (for changes/incidents), and Jira (for project tracking).
• Note: This role does not involve direct work with Microsoft Exchange mailboxes.

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in a large-scale Production Messaging environment, with deep knowledge of:
  • SMTP configuration and connectivity
  • Mail flow principles
  • DNS (Domain Name System)
  • MX (Mail Exchanger) records
  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)
  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework)
• 1+ year of direct, hands-on experience with Proofpoint Hybrid POD and Sentrions.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

• 2+ years of experience with other Email Security applications (e.g., M365 Defender, FireEye, DLP).
• Familiarity with Service Now, Jira, Nagios, and Splunk.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
• Experience with enterprise change and incident management processes, security policies, and regulatory, risk, and compliance frameworks.
• Familiarity with Agile methodology.
• Experience working for a financial institution and navigating its regulatory requirements.
