Electrical Design Studies Engineer - 5 Year

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP. is seeking a 5 yearElectrical Studies Engineer.This position is posted in POWER's Freeport office locations with the consideration to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located).
Roles and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for successful completion of assigned projects and for maintaining and improving client relationships. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as competence in working with clients and mentoring team members assigned to projects. Assigned projects will include electrical studies for utility and industrial/commercial clients. Systems to be analyzed will include conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, and transmission and distribution systems.

The level of this engineer requires an individual who has experience participating in the proposal writing process as well as enjoys customer contact to help in developing new opportunities for POWER. This person must be able to self-manage, with a strong conceptualization ability and strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills - including the capability to explain complex technical issues at a variety of levels to decision-makers and project teams.
Design Studies can include the following:
  • Substation grounding
  • Corona and electric and magnetic fields
  • Power quality (harmonics, voltage flicker, over/under voltage, etc.)
  • Motor starting
  • AC interference (transmission line interaction with railroads and pipelines)
  • Insulation coordination for AC and DC applications (lightning, switching surge/bipole failure, and contamination performance)
  • Transient (time domain) simulation
  • TRV analysis
  • Circuit breaker rating studies
  • Steady state unbalance and transposition studies
  • Single pole reclosing and associated design (secondary arc current)
  • Delayed zero crossing
  • Neutral reactor sizing
  • NESC clearance studies
  • Equipment minimum approach distance studies
  • Phase conductor sizing/selection (including DMR)
  • Optical shield wire sizing (and Coulomb rating)
  • Lightning performance prediction
  • Lightning/surge/voltage arrester application
  • Corona performance prediction
  • Corrosion analysis and mitigation
  • Finite-element electric/magnetic field analysis
  • Resonance studies/mitigation
  • Electric losses and economic considerations (net present value, etc.)
  • FACTS device implementation
  • Applicable Software: CDEGS, WinIGS, ATP-EMTP, PSCAD

Successful candidates must be willing to travel on occasion and work successfully in a customer focused, project-oriented environment.
Required Education/Experience
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required
  • Five (5) years of industry experience performing studies in technical disciplines described above
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills including proposal writing, report writing, and other technical writing
  • Experience with CDEGS, WinIGS, ATP-EMTP, PSCAD or equivalent software packages
Desired Education/Experience
  • Professional registration is not required; however, preference is given to applicants who are registered professional engineers (P.E., P. Eng.)
  • Strong understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles, including but not limited to electromagnetics and their impacts on power systems
  • Preference is also given to applicants with experience in customer-focused engineering projects in the technical areas above
  • Active participation in industry associations (e.g., CIGRE, IEEE, IEC) through WG and leadership roles
  • Drive to make the power industry better through knowledge sharing through conference presentations and White Paper development
