What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking a hands-on Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Special Hazards Fire Suppression New Product Introduction (NPI) team at our R&D facility in Marinette, WI. This role focuses on the design, development, testing, and certification of fire protection products for our Vehicle Fire Suppression Product Portfolio. Responsibilities include development of mechanical hardware including concept generation, detailed design, prototyping, and design verification testing, regulatory approval testing, and launch support. This is a mostly on-site position (not remote) and is not eligible for Visa sponsorship.

How you will do it
  • Create detailed product functional specifications using the inputs from sales, product management, and the voice of the customer.
  • Determine timelines and budgets for completion of engineering tasks within the product development process.
  • Develop product design concepts, lead prototype generation, and coordinate design and product verification testing.
  • Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Work with third party approval agencies to develop and execute testing programs to obtain the required approvals.
  • Communicate with program management to identify roadblocks and mitigation plans to maintain schedule and budget commitments.
  • Provide mentorship to new and/or less experienced co-workers.

What we look for

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 4+ years' experience in design, product development or R&D.
  • Academic and experienced based understanding of fundamental engineering theories, mathematics, mechanics, and physical science concepts to the job.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and corrective actions on difficult problems.
  • Expert knowledge of fire suppression products, applications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills for broadly scoped/cross functional/large projects.
  • Proven project management and organizational skills in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and decision-making ability.
  • Effective and professional communication with the ability to write reports and convey detailed technical information.

Preferred
  • 4+ years' experience in Fire Suppression Product Design and Development.
  • Experience with a stage-gate product development process.
  • Functional knowledge of process methods and tools such as DFMEA, DVP&R, DOE, risk analysis.
  • Ability for occasional travel.
  • Proficiency of MSOffice, PTC Creo and Windchill.
