Title: COBOL Developer

Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled COBOL Developer to join our Maintenance and Operations team in Austin, TX. This is a long-term opportunity to contribute to mission-critical applications that support state-wide operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in COBOL programming, JCL, SQL, and batch processing.
Responsibilities:
* Perform advanced COBOL development in support of ongoing application maintenance and new initiatives.
* Analyze, design, code, test, and implement complex business solutions following the software development life cycle (SDLC).
* Work on multiple projects and maintenance tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.
* Design and develop JCL and COBOL-based solutions that align with agency standards for accessibility, usability, and documentation.
* Troubleshoot application issues, identify root causes, and implement effective fixes.
* Create and maintain detailed documentation including technical designs, user guides, test plans, and release notes.
* Collaborate with QA and business teams to ensure applications meet specifications and regulatory requirements.
* Participate in code reviews and adhere to coding standards and security best practices.
* Work with tools like GoAnywhere, shell scripting, SQL stored procedures, and legacy/mainframe batch jobs.
Required Skills:
* 5+ years of COBOL development experience
* Expertise in JCL, SQL, and Stored Procedures
* Experience with GoAnywhere MFT (Managed File Transfer)
* Strong understanding of batch scripting and legacy mainframe systems
* Proficient in SDLC methodologies, including Agile or Waterfall
* Ability to write and execute comprehensive test cases
* Excellent troubleshooting, debugging, and problem-solving skills
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have):
* Experience working with government agencies or large-scale enterprise applications
* Familiarity with accessibility standards (Section 508 compliance)
* Exposure to modernization or migration of legacy systems
