Job Details

Role: Sr. Substation Engineer

Location: San Ramon, CA/Salt Lake City, UT

Type: Permanent/Fulltime

Salary Range: $100-$150k + bonus


Must Haves



  • 5+ years experience in high-voltage substation design/layouts (34.5kV 500kV).



  • Experience designing relay schematics for control systems.



  • Hands-on work with relays and metering in electrical substations, preferably Greenfield projects.



  • Strong AC/DC fundamentals.



  • Experience applying civil/structural codes (NESC, ANSI, AISC, ACI, IEEE) and calculating grid requirements.



  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering.



  • PE license is highly preferred.



Duties & Responsibilities



  • Produce design documents/drawings including wiring diagrams, schematics, BOMs, and as-built markups with minimal supervision.



  • Perform engineering tasks such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short-circuit calculations.



  • Use engineering software for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and system studies.



  • Review and support project schedules, ensuring on-time delivery.



  • Apply NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards and corporate engineering practices.



  • Use document management systems and supervise project activities as required.



  • Coordinate with project engineers, clients, and field teams.



  • Visit job sites for hands-on training and design insight.



  • Maintain accuracy and quality of work; escalate issues proactively.



  • Travel short-term as needed.



Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor s in Electrical Engineering or related field.



  • 3+ years of substation design experience (7+ years for senior roles).



  • Senior roles require a PE license or ability to obtain one within a year.



  • Familiarity with utility-grade electrical relays; experience with relays/metering at 138kV+.



  • Experience designing relay/control schematics, connection drawings, and cabling.



  • Relay coordination experience is a plus.



  • Strong understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase power, per-unit math, symmetrical components, and substation components/functions.



  • Knowledge of all required design documents and relevant engineering standards.
