Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of an innovative prototype for automated restaurant equipment. As a PLC Automation Engineer, you'll work daily in-person at our client's automation labs in Plano, TX, taking full ownership of controls design and PLC programming for cutting-edge automation systems. You'll collaborate with design engineers to bring concepts to life, from component selection through final implementation.
The role involves hands-on work in a state-of-the-art laboratory environment, requiring Monday-Friday, 40-hour work weeks with optional overtime based on project needs. No overnight travel is expected. The ideal candidate is passionate about automation, thrives in a hands-on environment, and is excited about taking complete ownership of complex technical challenges.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with design engineers to confirm selection of sensors, motors, and other electrical components
- Finalize control panel design starting from standard architecture template and standardized component set
- Complete electrical BOM and release for procurement
- Update wiring diagrams for final control panel design starting from template
- Develop and debug ladder logic programming for sequence and control in Automation Direct PLC using standard PLC template
- Spec sensors, stepper motors, and other electrical components
- Wire and troubleshoot panels and devices (120VAC and low voltage)
- Read, modify, and create wiring diagrams
- Build, wire, and test automation solutions hands-on
- Take full sole ownership of controls design and PLC programming
Required Experience/Skills
- 5+ years PLC programming experience
- Ability to develop and implement ladder logic programs from scratch
- Experience integrating and programming stepper motors, gantry or motion systems, and sensors
- Ability to wire and troubleshoot panels and devices (120VAC and low voltage)
- Ability to read, modify, and create wiring diagrams
- Basic safety system or safety relay knowledge
- Hands-on approach with interest in building, wiring, and debugging solutions
- Passion for automation and innovation
- Effective communication and collaboration skills
- Willingness to take full ownership of controls design and PLC programming
Nice-to-Haves
- Automation Direct PLC familiarity (Productivity Suite software ladder logic)
- Experience with PLC programming using recipe management, data management, remote data logging, or MQTT protocol
- ANSI/CE/TUV or UL standards experience
- Personal interest in restaurant automation or food service industry
- Experience in similar laboratory or innovation environment
