Job Title: Epic EHR Integration Specialist
Location:100% Remote
About the Role:
We are seeking a technical subject matter expert (SME) with deep experience in Epic EHR integration, FHIR APIs, and HL7 interfaces. The SME will design and implement interoperability workflows to enable secure, real-time data exchange between Epic and connected clinical systems. The role involves hands-on development, system architecture, and collaboration with both engineering and clinical informatics teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Architect and implement FHIR-based API integrations for patient, encounter, and clinical document data.
- Develop and maintain HL7 v2 ORM/ORU interfaces using Interface Engines such as Mirth Connect or Rhapsody.
- Build and optimize secure data pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and synchronizing EHR data.
- Configure OAuth2 authentication, TLS encryption, and other security protocols for PHI compliance.
- Design and maintain FHIR-compatible data models and database schemas for clinical data storage.
- Collaborate with backend engineers to create event-driven workflows triggered by Epic order events.
- Lead testing and validation using Epic s sandbox and Vendor Services environments.
- Define and execute UAT test cases ensuring reliability and interoperability across systems.
- Troubleshoot interface-level defects, API issues, and data synchronization failures.
- Serve as the Epic technical liaison, advising on versioning, schema updates, and upgrade paths.
Required Technical Skills:
- Expert-level understanding of Epic FHIR APIs (Patient, Encounter, Observation, DocumentReference, Procedure, etc.)
- Strong proficiency in HL7 v2.x message structures and Interface Engine configuration
- Experience with Node.js for middleware and API development
- Solid knowledge of FHIR R4/R5 schemas, JSON/XML transformation, and ETL pipelines
- Familiarity with Epic App Orchard and Epic Vendor Services environments
- Skilled in SQL/NoSQL database design and query optimization for healthcare data
- Deep understanding of secure API implementation (OAuth2, TLS 1.2+, JWT, encryption)
- Experience with Dockerized deployments and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform)
- Competence in automated testing and validation of FHIR/HL7 interfaces
Preferred Qualifications:
- Epic Bridges, FHIR, or App Orchard certification
- Experience integrating with EpicCare Inpatient or Ambulatory modules
- Familiarity with clinical workflows such as cardiology, emergency, or inpatient coordination
- Strong understanding of HIPAA, SOC 2, and healthcare data governance
