Lead Software Engineer, Design Technology

Design Technology is responsible for making the tools Design Engineers use to design, e.g., batteries, Optimus, Robotaxi, and all new factories, every bit as intelligent and dynamic as the products themselves. As a Technical Lead Software Engineer, you will lead the research, development, delivery, and site reliability of products that touch virtually every part of our design process.

Responsibilities

• Be a technical lead for a problem domain in design technology, for example, authoring, change management, or design platform ops.
• Work with a small team of engineers and one PM to set and meet aggressive targets to solve problems in your domain
• Supervise between two and four junior and mid-level engineers, focusing on mentorship and skills growth
• Develop software abstractions relevant to your investment area, then code in Java, Go, C++, C#, TypeScript, Next.js, Bash, etc.
• Write and review design docs and code for new services, features, refactors, technology choices, process changes, etc.
• Participate in an on-call rotation, manage incidents as Incident Commander, write actionable incident reports
• Maintain written task status, i.e. Jira, for observability and human capacity planning
• Participate in hiring, conduct technical screens and provide feedback to hiring managers in panels

Requirements

• 10+ years of successful experience as a software engineer
• A strong opinion about software engineering culture and process
• Excellent written communication skills
• Comfort with software engineering and computer science fundamentals, e.g., OOD, TDD, algorithm complexity analysis, and statistics
• Experience being the responsible engineer in high stakes environments involving, e.g., microservices, event streaming, and distributed systems
• An interest in working on legacy software, especially 3D Experience
• Familiarity with containerization and deployment configuration with Docker, Kubernetes, Podman, etc.
