Job Description

ECS is seeking a Cloud Engineer to work in our Fairfax, VA office.

ECS is an expert technology firm focused on physical and cloud solutions exceeding our customer's technical needs. We specialize in migrating custom-developed, COTS, and GOTS applications into premium cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform). We also offer a complete suite of managed service solutions for our customers, to include design, architecture, DevOps, systems administration, big data, security, and 24x7 cloud support services.

ECS is seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer to work as part of a team responsible for the development and integration of AI and Cloud Solutions for DoD Mission Partner Enclaves (MPE). The Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, documenting, and maintaining DoD MPEs' physical and virtual infrastructure. The highly qualified candidate has hands-on skills and expertise:
  • In DoD network systems supporting large DoD MPE programs that operate and maintain multiple IL 4/5 hybrid-cloud environments
  • Supporting client teams developing and/or enriching applications in an AWS cloud environment
  • Providing maintenance and support in both classified and unclassified environments with the goal of providing stable, secure, flexible, efficient, and cost-effective frameworks
The Cloud Engineer reports directly to the Technical Lead, and will routinely engage with customers, engineers, and Mission Partners. Duties include:
  • Implement and maintain multi-component, cloud-based / hybrid solutions and new capabilities in AWS that meet customer and security requirements.
  • Assist in partner network integration, testing, and monitoring.
  • Install, configure, maintain, update, manage, and refine information systems.
  • Ensure system components maintain compliance with DoD requirements.
  • Conduct functional, interoperability, and security testing.
  • Implement routine system updates including STIGs, OS, and application patching.
  • Analyze system performance for potential security problems.
  • Participate in technical incident response and security assessment activities.
  • Coordinate and/or provide support for all enclave applications and operations.
  • Evaluate customer issues and make educated decisions on technologies, tools, and the overall delivery strategy.
  • Collaborate with operations, technical, and business development managers, and ECS Centers of Excellence on key components of large solutions.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
NOTE: This position constitutes a hybrid remote/onsite work opportunity, with up to 2 business days onsite at ECS Corporate offices in Fairfax, VA. At the manager's discretion, highly qualified candidates may be afforded the opportunity to work full-time remotely, with required occasional travel to Fairfax, VA and surrounding Northern Virginia government facilities and installations to support customer / client / team meetings and events.

Required Skills

  • U.S. citizen.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance, with the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance with SCI indoctrination.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science; Information Systems Management; or similar Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline.
  • DoD 8140 IAT Level II or greater certification (CompTIA Security+ and/or CISSP preferred), either active, or within 45 calendar days of hire.
  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification (or higher), either active, or within 45 calendar days of hire.
  • 6+ years of knowledge, skills, and prior hands-on experience:
    • In a cybersecurity, Enterprise IT architecture, and/or other relevant technology-related role(s).
    • With IT platform fundamentals
    • Delivering and sustaining technical and cloud solutions and proficiency working with Amazon Web Services' cloud services and technologies including, but not limited to: EC2, Storage concepts (S3, RDS, EBS), EKS, VPC, and Security Groups / IAM
  • Fundamental understanding of:
    • Data management and security, specifically within cloud environments, utilizing a combination of services and infrastructure
    • DoD-tailored change control and implementation processes
    • AI/ML operations and development-to-field lifecycle
  • Ability to deploy and maintain security controls within complex IT systems, including cloud services, Linux/Windows operating systems, applications, and networking.
  • Expert in NIST, FISMA, and FedRAMP compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience with scripted automation (e.g. Bash, Python, PowerShell).
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges specific to downstream customers.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with a proven ability to weigh the relative costs and benefits of potential actions and identify the most appropriate solution.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, with the ability to effectively and professionally interact with a diverse set of stakeholders (from peers to end-users to executive management).
  • Ability to travel < 10% to CONUS locations (primarily the Northern VA metropolitan area) for customer/client/team support.


Desired Skills

Preference shown to candidates with:
  • DMV local homebase, with the willingness to work in a hybrid remote / onsite capacity in Fairfax, VA.
  • Current DoD Top Secret (or higher) security clearance.
  • Prior experience working in/with a DoD organization and/or with DoD performers/personnel.
  • Experience with Cloud networking and troubleshooting (e.g., IP networking, VPNs, DNS, and load balancing).
  • AWS Certifications (e.g. AWS Cloud Practitioner, AWS Solutions Architect, etc.).
  • Advanced understanding of DevOps Continuous Integration/CD.
  • Experience enforcing cloud security practices including configuring encryption, implementing VPC endpoint policies, bucket policies, and locking down security groups.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on technical experience in Network and Transport protocols, tools, and techniques.
  • Experience with data engineering fundamentals including ETL, wrangling, database requirements (structured/unstructured), normalization, and storage.
  • Experience in supporting Microsoft Active Directory/ AD FS.
  • Hands-on knowledge and experience with Atlassian's Jira and Confluence.
