Job Description

ECS is seeking a Cybersecurity Technical Writer to work in our Washington, DC office.

ECS Federal, a rapidly expanding information security and information technology company in Fairfax, VA, is seeking a skilled and experienced Cybersecurity Technical Writer. This full-time, permanent position will support a long-term contract with a US Government civilian agency, focusing on a comprehensive range of cybersecurity services. The Cybersecurity Technical Writer will be responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining a wide range of cybersecurity documentation. This includes, but is not limited to, policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, security assessments, incident response plans, user manuals, and training materials. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, excellent writing and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical subject matter experts (SMEs). This role is crucial for ensuring that our cybersecurity posture is clearly communicated, understood, and adhered to across the organization.
  • Develop and Maintain Cybersecurity Documentation:
  • Create and update cybersecurity policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures in alignment with industry best practices (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) and regulatory requirements.
  • Produce clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, system descriptions, security control implementation details, and operational runbooks.
  • Develop and maintain incident all cybersecurity documentation to include, but not limited to, response plans, policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, security assessments, incident response plans, user manuals, and training materials
  • Assist with incident reports, security assessment reports, vulnerability management documentation, and risk assessment summaries.
  • Prepare user-friendly guides, FAQs, and knowledge base articles for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Information Gathering and Analysis:
  • Collaborate closely with cybersecurity engineers, architects, analysts, and other SMEs to gather technical information and understand complex concepts.
  • Conduct research on cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, technologies, and industry trends to ensure documentation is current and relevant.
  • Analyze existing documentation for gaps, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Translate highly technical information into accessible language for diverse audiences, including technical staff, management, and end-users.
  • Facilitate reviews and approvals of documentation with relevant stakeholders.
  • Participate in cybersecurity projects and initiatives, providing documentation support throughout the lifecycle.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of cybersecurity awareness and training materials.
  • Quality Assurance and Standards:
  • Ensure all documentation adheres to established style guides, templates, and branding.
  • Implement and maintain version control for all documents.
  • Continuously improving documentation processes and tools
Salary Range: $88,000 - $105,000

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in technical writing, with at least 2 years focused on cybersecurity or IT security documentation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of cybersecurity concepts, terminology, and best practices.
  • Proficiency with documentation tools and content management systems.
  • Strong portfolio of technical writing samples demonstrating clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style guides.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust


Desired Skills

  • Certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), or similar.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) frameworks and tools.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automating documentation tasks or data extraction.
