Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Data Center Manager to oversee operations, maintenance, and infrastructure management across multiple data center sites. This role demands solid expertise in electrical, mechanical, network systems, and physical server infrastructure, plus leadership and project management skills to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance (zero downtime expectation). The manager will combine technical depth, strategic planning, vendor oversight, and operational execution in a mission-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a Data Center Operations/Services team, including personnel scheduling, performance, training, and coordination, to ensure continuous, reliable operation.
  • Oversee the full data center infrastructure lifecycle: electrical distribution, UPS (static & rotary), emergency standby generation, HVAC / chillers / computer room air handlers, fire suppression & detection, security, building management systems.
  • Manage physical server, switch, network hardware installations, upgrades, configurations, structured cabling, and remote & on-site troubleshooting of infrastructure equipment.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute both planned and emergency maintenance events; ensure these are performed in a controlled, documented, and safe manner.
  • Maintain environmental and operational integrity: cleanliness, airflow, cooling efficiency, security controls, safety, compliance with relevant codes & standards.
  • Monitor capacity planning: space, power, cooling, rack density; collaborate with architecture/engineering teams on long-term infrastructure planning and expansion.
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation: layouts, cabling, equipment inventory, vendor contracts, maintenance schedules, incident reports, and operational procedures.
  • Manage vendor relationships, service contracts, and third-party providers; ensure that service level agreements (SLAs) and operational level agreements (OLAs) are met.
  • Use best practices in project management, quality assurance (including preventative & predictive maintenance), and continuous improvement (LEAN/Six Sigma etc.).
  • Participate in budgeting, forecasting, cost management for operations, maintenance, and infrastructure capital projects.
  • Provide after-hours/on-call support, and travel between data center sites as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5+ years of technical experience in data center operations, facility infrastructure, or critical systems (electrical, mechanical, cooling, power distribution, network).
  • At least 3 years in a management or leadership role overseeing teams, vendor management, or project leadership in a data center or similar mission-critical environment.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Deep knowledge of electrical systems (switchgear, power distribution units, UPS, emergency generators), mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, pumps, airflow management).
  • Hands-on experience with server, storage, SAN, network hardware; familiarity with structured cabling (fiber and copper), patching, racks, rack layout best practices.
  • Strong understanding of monitoring & infrastructure management tools; capacity for remote troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of safety, environmental, regulatory, and fire suppression standards applicable to data centers.

Certifications & Methodologies:

  • Preferred: IAITAM, Certified Data Center Management Professional (CDCMP), Certified Data Center Professional (CDCP), or other relevant credentials.
  • Familiarity with ITIL, PMP / Project Management, LEAN / Six Sigma methodologies.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical), Information Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Alternatively, equivalent combination of technical education, trade or military training and hands-on experience is acceptable but must meet the experience thresholds above.

Other Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational, documentation, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure in a fast-paced, high-availability environment.

Preferred Experience / Desirable Attributes

  • Experience maintaining or targeting "five-nines" or higher uptime (e.g. 99.999%) for mission-critical systems.
  • Prior experience with budget management, forecasting, cost optimization in operations or facilities.
  • Experience coordinating commissioning, start-ups, or large capital / infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with security systems (video surveillance, access control), environmental monitoring, and compliance / regulatory audit readiness.
  • Experience with cloud or hybrid infrastructure, specifically VMWare, and/or coordinating with IT architecture teams.

Certifications / Licenses

  • Prefer holders of recognized data center / facility management certifications (e.g. CDCMP, CDCP, IAITAM).
  • Safety / regulatory / electrical/mechanical trade certifications desirable.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Facilities Management, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent education (associate degree or trade/military/technical schooling) plus substantial relevant experience acceptable if meeting experience thresholds.
Requirements

  • High School diploma equivalency with 3 years of cumulative experience OR Associate'

    degree/Bachelor's degree with 2 years of cumulative experience OR 7 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
  • 3 years of leadership or management experience preferred.
