Job Title: IBM iSeries (AS400) Systems Programmer / Administrator
Location: Cranston, RI
Duration: 12 Months+
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled IBM Power9 / iSeries (AS400) Systems Programmer / Administrator to support and maintain mission-critical legacy systems, including IBM AS400 and Mainframe environments. The ideal candidate will be responsible for systems programming, performance monitoring, backup and recovery processes, and ensuring secure, reliable, and high-performing operations.
You will also assist in legacy modernization efforts, disaster recovery planning, security policies, and support business continuity processes in coordination with other agency and enterprise teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain, monitor, upgrade, and report on all IBM iSeries systems and HMC infrastructure, including PTFs, firmware, and security patches
Manage system backups and recovery processes, including LaserVault and tape library solutions
Perform daily system health checks, performance tuning, and system value audits
Configure and support replication/DR processes, journaling, and database integrity
Configure and manage user profiles, object authorities, job schedulers, and output queues
Analyze logs (DSPLOG, MLOG), resolve system errors, and respond to critical messages
Configure client emulation software and connectivity tools (GoAnywhere, Mocha, Rumba, Blue Zone)
Troubleshoot and resolve runtime errors in coordination with EOC operators and developers
Support interfaces between systems and other agency platforms
Create and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and system diagrams
Participate in disaster recovery, BCP, and COOP planning and testing
Provide operational reports, metrics, and compliance audit support
Assist with migration planning for modernization of legacy applications
Required Skills and Experience:
3 5+ years of experience supporting IBM iSeries (AS400) / Power9 / System 36 environments
Strong experience in COBOL programming, database recovery, and AS400 systems administration
Proficiency with IBM OS utilities, MVS/VSE JCL, Easytrieve Plus, DSPLOG/MLOG, and job scheduling tools
Experience with DB2, SQL, VSAM databases, including performance tuning and maintenance
Familiarity with GoAnywhere, SFTP, ODBC, FTP, and other system integration tools
Knowledge of XL Print Paris, Visio, Jira, MS Teams, and MS Office Suite
Experience with system backups, test restores, journaling, disk space optimization
Strong understanding of system values, network routing, DNS, and host tables
Ability to support application conversion and work with third-party vendors
Excellent documentation, troubleshooting, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Public sector or government IT experience
Knowledge of Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and Continuity of Operations (COOP)
Experience in legacy application modernization initiatives
Familiarity with performance monitoring tools such as IBM Navigator or Performance Navigator
